Biography

Neil Gaiman, born on November 10, 1960 in Portchester, England, transcended the boundaries of comics to establish himself as one of the greatest contemporary storytellers. He entered the American comics industry with work for DC Comics in the late 1980s, most notably Black Orchid in 1988 with Dave McKean. But it was the launch of The Sandman in January 1989, with the first issue illustrated by Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, that would shake the industry to its core.

The Sandman, published across seventy-five issues from 1989 to 1996, tells the story of Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, one of the seven Endless. The series became the first monthly comic book to win a World Fantasy Award, for issue #19 titled A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1991 — an honor so unexpected that the award's rules were subsequently changed to exclude comics. Gaiman collaborated with roughly a dozen different artists throughout the run, including Kelley Jones, Jill Thompson, Marc Hempel, Michael Zulli, and Charles Vess, each bringing a unique visual dimension to the various story arcs.

The series weaves mythology, literature, horror, and fantasy together with remarkable erudition. Story arcs such as Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll's House, Season of Mists, and The Kindly Ones have become classics. Sandman also spawned major spin-offs: Death: The High Cost of Living, Lucifer by Mike Carey, and more recently the Sandman Universe launched in 2018.

Alongside his comics career, Gaiman has become a major novelist with American Gods, Coraline, Stardust, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. He has also written episodes of Doctor Who and collaborated with Terry Pratchett on Good Omens. Each literary or audiovisual success further reinforces the value of his original comics on the secondary market.

For collectors, Sandman #1 is a cornerstone piece whose value continues to climb, particularly since the Netflix adaptation in 2022. Issue #8, the first story centered on Death, and #19, winner of the World Fantasy Award, are especially sought after. A complete run of all seventy-five issues in good condition represents a substantial but sound investment. Gaiman remains the author who opened the doors of comics to a literary audience, and his works continue to draw new readers with every generation.
