Jim Valentino, born on December 16, 1952, is a figure who is often underestimated, whose impact on the comics industry far exceeds his public recognition. Before co-founding Image Comics, Valentino built a solid career at Marvel, most notably with a well-regarded run on Guardians of the Galaxy, which he launched in 1990 with the first issue of the ongoing series and continued through #29.
His version of the Guardians of the Galaxy, set in the Marvel universe's future in the thirty-first century, is an ambitious cosmic science-fiction work that introduces characters such as Talon and considerably expands Marvel's future universe. While this incarnation differs radically from the one popularized by the films, it saw renewed interest among collectors following the movies' success, as readers rediscovered the franchise's cosmic roots.
In 1992, Valentino was one of the seven founders of Image Comics, where he created Shadowhawk, a vigilante living with HIV who fights crime while battling the disease. This socially engaged approach, rare in the superhero landscape of the time, set Valentino apart from his co-founders, who leaned more toward spectacle. Shadowhawk won an Eisner Award in 1993 for the series' social themes.
But it is behind the scenes that Valentino exerted his most lasting influence. As publisher of Image Comics starting in 1999, he transformed the publisher from a collective of superhero studios into a publishing house open to all genres and all creators. It was under his leadership that titles such as Torso by Brian Michael Bendis, Powers by Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, and Robert Kirkman's early work found a home at Image. His vision of Image as a platform for independent creators laid the groundwork for the revival that would accelerate under Eric Stephenson.
For collectors, Guardians of the Galaxy #1 (1990) is an interesting piece whose value was boosted by the MCU. Shadowhawk #1 (1992) is an accessible and historically significant Image key issue. The various death variant covers of Shadowhawk, popular in the 1990s, can easily be found in back-issue bins at affordable prices. Valentino represents the intellectual and socially committed side of the Image revolution, and his role as a builder deserves far greater recognition.
Co-founder of Image Comics and tireless advocate for independent comics. His editorial work enabled many creators to publish their original works.
