Erik Larsen, born on May 6, 1962 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, embodies perseverance and creative vision in the world of independent comics. Co-founder of Image Comics in 1992, he is best known for Savage Dragon, a series he has written, drawn, and inked entirely on his own for more than thirty years — an achievement with no parallel in the modern industry.
Before Image, Larsen made his mark at Marvel with a well-regarded run on The Amazing Spider-Man, where he succeeded Todd McFarlane on issues 329 through 350 between 1990 and 1991. His dynamic style and flair for spectacle earned him a growing fan base, and he was among the seven dissident artists who founded Image Comics to claim ownership over their own creations.
Savage Dragon debuted with a special issue in July 1992, followed by a three-issue mini-series, then an ongoing series launched in June 1993 that has now surpassed two hundred and sixty issues. The character — an amnesiac green-skinned police officer with superhuman strength — operates in a Chicago teeming with grotesque super-villains and absurd situations. The series' defining feature is that time passes in real time: Dragon ages, his children grow up, characters die permanently, and the world changes in ways that cannot be undone.
Larsen also served as publisher of Image Comics from 2004 to 2008, overseeing a period of creative renewal for the publisher. His commitment to creator ownership and artistic independence has made him a respected figure in the industry, well beyond his work as an artist.
His artistic style is defined by an energetic line, explosive compositions, and a pronounced taste for monsters and fantastical creatures. He cites Jack Kirby as a major influence, and that lineage shows in the visual generosity of his pages. Unlike many of his contemporaries from the 1990s, Larsen never chased trends and has maintained a remarkable creative consistency throughout his career.
For collectors, Savage Dragon #1 (mini-series, 1992) and #1 (ongoing series, 1993) are foundational pieces of Image Comics history available at accessible price points. Early issues are attracting growing interest as the series' longevity is increasingly recognized as exceptional. The series remains one of the longest runs by a single creator in comics history — a record that grows stronger with every new issue.
Co-founder of Image Comics and creator of Savage Dragon, an independent series he has produced entirely on his own for over 30 years. A benchmark of creative perseverance.
