Alan Moore, born on 18 November 1953 in Northampton, England, is universally recognized as the greatest writer in the history of comics. His career began in British magazines in the early 1980s, notably with stories for 2000 AD and Warrior, where he launched V for Vendetta in 1982, illustrated by David Lloyd. This dystopian tale, completed at DC Comics between 1988 and 1989, remains a landmark work of political comics.
In 1984, DC Comics entrusted him with Saga of the Swamp Thing, which he took over from issue 20. Moore transformed a B-list series into a literary masterpiece, deconstructing the character's origin in the legendary #21 and exploring ecological and metaphysical themes unprecedented in the medium. His run, which extended through #64, laid the foundations for what would become the Vertigo imprint. Alongside this, he wrote The Killing Joke in 1988 with Brian Bolland, a Batman one-shot that redefined the Joker forever and whose narrative consequences are still felt today.
But it is Watchmen, published in twelve issues from September 1986 to October 1987, drawn by Dave Gibbons, that cemented Moore's status as an absolute genius. This deconstruction of the superhero myth is the only comics work to appear on Time Magazine's list of the hundred greatest novels of the twentieth century. Its mirrored narrative structure, its use of the nine-panel grid as a thematic tool, and its philosophical depth have never been matched.
After his break with DC, Moore founded America's Best Comics in the late 1990s, producing Tom Strong, Top 10, Promethea, and above all The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Kevin O'Neill. Meanwhile, From Hell, published by Eddie Campbell Comics between 1989 and 1998, is considered one of the greatest graphic novels ever created — a vertiginous exploration of the Jack the Ripper murders.
On the collector's market, Watchmen #1 in Near Mint condition remains an attainable grail that is steadily appreciating in value. Swamp Thing #20 through #64 form a highly sought-after complete run, while The Killing Joke first printing remains one of the most prized one-shots. Moore, who consistently refused to endorse film adaptations of his work, stepped away from comics in 2019, leaving behind an unmatched literary legacy.
Watchmen elevated comics to the status of recognized literature. Its influence on the deconstruction of superheroes and complex storytelling in comics remains unrivaled.
