Tom King is one of the most influential and distinctive writers in contemporary comics. A former CIA officer who served in counterterrorism operations, he brings to his stories a psychological depth and narrative structure that set him apart from his peers from the very start. He broke into the industry with Grayson (2014) at DC, co-written with Tim Seeley, but it was The Vision (2015–2016, #1–12) at Marvel that catapulted him to stardom. The maxiseries, drawn by Gabriel Hernandez Walta, received universal acclaim and won the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series.
In 2016, King took over Batman with issue #1 of the Rebirth run, a tenure that stretched through #85 (2020). That run — marked by the I Am Suicide arc, the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, and the celebrated issue #50 devoted to the aborted wedding — divided fans but cemented his reputation as a bold, uncompromising author. His collaboration with artist Mikel Janin produced pages of remarkable elegance, while issues featuring David Finch and Clay Mann have become highly sought-after collector's items.
King has made the 12-issue maxiseries format his signature, mastering it like no one else. Mister Miracle (2017–2018, 12 issues) with Mitch Gerads is regarded as a modern masterpiece, exploring depression and fatherhood through the character of Scott Free. Strange Adventures (2020–2021) with Gerads and Doc Shaner interrogates the idea of the war hero. More recently, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021–2022) with Bilquis Evely inspired the upcoming DC film.
For collectors, Tom King's body of work represents a sound investment. The Vision #1 has seen consistent appreciation, particularly in CGC 9.8. Mister Miracle #1 follows a similar trajectory. His minimalist style, repetitive grids and poetic prose have redefined what a superhero comic book can be in the twenty-first century. First printings of his maxiseries have become essential references in any serious modern collection.
King brought an introspective and poetic narrative style to mainstream comics, influencing an entire generation of writers.
