Biography

Saladin Ahmed is a writer whose career spans literature, fantasy, and comic books with rare elegance. A novelist by training, his debut novel Throne of the Crescent Moon (2012), a fantasy epic inspired by medieval Arab-Muslim culture, was a finalist for the Hugo and Nebula Awards and won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. This literary recognition opened the doors of Marvel to him, where he made his debut with a run on Black Bolt (20172018) that became an instant classic.

Black Bolt (20172018, 12 issues), illustrated by Christian Ward, was a revelation. The King of the Inhumans, stripped of his powers and imprisoned in a cosmic jail, became under Ahmed's pen a character of unexpected depth. The series, elevated by Ward's psychedelic and luminous art, was nominated for Eisner Awards and remains one of the most universally respected series of the decade. For collectors, Black Bolt #1 is an undervalued gem whose market price has yet to reflect the exceptional quality of its contents.

In 2018, Ahmed took over Miles Morales: Spider-Man with the #1 of the new series, alongside artist Javier Garron. His run, spanning several years, defined Miles Morales as a character in his own right, independent of Peter Parker's legacy. Ahmed handled the character's Afro-Latino identity, his family relationships, and his Brooklyn roots with great care, while pitting him against threats such as the Assessor and Selim. The explosive popularity of Miles, fuelled by the animated film Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and its sequel Across the Spider-Verse (2023), gave these issues considerable visibility.

For collectors, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 (2018) by Ahmed is a solid back-issue pick — accessible and full of potential. Issues introducing new characters or villains are ones to watch. Ahmed's body of work is distinguished throughout by a sense of humanity and cultural sensitivity that enriches the medium. His ability to write diverse characters with authenticity, free from condescension or caricature, makes him an essential voice in the contemporary American comic book landscape.
