James Tynion IV is a writer who rose from mentee to major creative force in the industry. Trained at the DC Comics Writers Workshop under the direct tutelage of Scott Snyder, he launched his career co-writing back-up stories for Batman during Snyder's New 52 run. He then took the reins of Detective Comics starting with #934 (2016) as part of Rebirth, assembling a team that included Batwoman, Clayface, and Spoiler, with a remarkable eye for casting.
In 2020, Tynion succeeded Tom King on Batman with #86, kicking off a run that extended through #117 (2021). His tenure was defined by the creation of Punchline, whose first appearance in Batman #89 and first cover in #92 turned both issues into highly speculative commodities on the secondary market. The introduction of Ghost-Maker and the Joker War crossover made this an electrifying period for collectors.
It is in the independent sphere, however, that Tynion found his most personal voice. Something is Killing the Children, launched in 2019 at BOOM! Studios with Werther Dell'Erica, became a phenomenon. Issue #1 climbed from a few dollars to several hundred in CGC 9.8, and the series landed a television adaptation. The Nice House on the Lake (2021–2022) at DC Black Label with Alvaro Martinez Bueno is a critically acclaimed psychological thriller. The Department of Truth (2020) at Image with Martin Simmonds explores conspiracy theories through a uniquely striking visual aesthetic.
For modern collectors, Tynion is essential reading. Something is Killing the Children #1 has become one of the most valuable independent single issues of the 2020s. Batman #89 (first appearance of Punchline) and Batman #92 remain highly sought-after pieces. His ability to create original characters that resonate with audiences — both at major publishers and in the independent space — makes his first printings closely tracked investments on the market. Tynion embodies the new generation of writers capable of moving between mainstream and creator-owned work with equal success.
Tynion demonstrated that a creator could excel simultaneously in mainstream DC and independent comics, paving the way for new career models in the industry.
