Biography

Ryan Stegman is an American comic book artist whose energetic, detail-rich linework has made him one of the most closely associated artists with Marvel's major events of the past decade. Trained at the Joe Kubert School, he broke into Marvel in the early 2010s, first making his mark on Scarlet Spider (20122013, Kaine Parker) before moving on to Superior Spider-Man (20132014) with Dan Slott, where his visceral, dynamic style proved a perfect match for the concept of Otto Octavius inhabiting Peter Parker's body.

It was his collaboration with writer Donny Cates on Venom starting with issue #1 (2018) that catapulted him to the top of the industry. That run completely reinvented Venom mythology, introducing the concepts of Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, and the Necrosword. Stegman's artwork — with its organic, tentacle-like lines ideally suited to the character — defined the look of Venom for an entire generation. Venom #1 (2018) is a landmark issue, while the issues introducing Knull have become highly sought-after collectibles.

The King in Black crossover (20202021), the culmination of the Cates/Stegman run, is a major Marvel event in which Knull invades Earth. Stegman delivered pages of remarkable intensity, with dark, sweeping compositions that rank among the finest event pages Marvel has produced in the decade. He also contributed to Uncanny Avengers and launched his creator-owned series Vanish (2022) at Image Comics with Cates, a horror-superhero narrative that showcases his versatility.

For collectors, Stegman's issues on Venom form a cornerstone of any modern Marvel collection. Venom #1 (2018) is essential, especially in CGC 9.8. The King in Black issues, particularly #1, are prized event books. Superior Spider-Man #1 with Stegman's cover remains a fan-favorite. His style — instantly recognizable for its fluid lines and expressive ink splashes — makes every page a work of art that justifies owning the original print. Vanish #1 from Image is an intriguing bet for collectors banking on creator-owned titles.
