Matt Fraction, born Matthew Fritchman on December 1, 1975 in Chicago, Illinois, is a writer whose inventive and visually daring style has redefined several major characters in the Marvel universe. His career began in the independent scene with works such as Last of the Independents from AiT/Planet Lar, and above all Casanova from Image Comics in 2006, a psychedelic spy series created with brothers Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon that already heralded his taste for non-linear storytelling.
At Marvel, Fraction first made his mark with The Immortal Iron Fist (2006–2009), co-written with Ed Brubaker and drawn by David Aja. The series reinvents the character by placing him within a lineage of immortal champions, adding unprecedented mythological depth. The collaboration with Aja was already electric, foreshadowing their masterpiece to come.
His run on Invincible Iron Man, launched in 2008 with issue #1, stretched across more than sixty issues and covered the World's Most Wanted arc, in which Tony Stark erases his own memory to protect the identities of registered heroes. Fraction modernized the character in step with Robert Downey Jr.'s cinematic portrayal, creating a remarkable synergy between comics and film.
But it is Hawkeye, launched in August 2012 with David Aja on art, that stands as his most celebrated work. Over twenty-two issues published irregularly through 2015, Fraction and Aja reimagined Clint Barton as a clumsy neighborhood hero living in a Brooklyn apartment building. Aja's revolutionary graphic design, the use of purple as a chromatic signature, and experimental single issues such as #11 — told from the perspective of the dog Lucky — made the series one of the most influential comics of the decade. Issue #11 won an Eisner Award, and the run as a whole is regularly cited among the best Marvel has ever published.
At Image, Fraction co-created Sex Criminals (2013–2020) with Chip Zdarsky, a romantic comedy about a couple who can stop time during orgasm. As hilarious as it is moving, the series won an Eisner Award and demonstrated Fraction's ability to blend the absurd with the deeply human.
For collectors, Hawkeye #1 (2012) is a key modern issue whose value reflects its critical importance. Sex Criminals #1 is highly sought after. Invincible Iron Man #1 (2008) remains accessible and relevant. Casanova #1 is a cult collectible for fans of avant-garde comics.
His Hawkeye with David Aja revolutionized storytelling in superhero comics. His Invincible Iron Man defined the modern version of the character.
