Biography

Terry Moore, born on March 25, 1954, is a complete auteur whose work embodies the best of American independent comics. Writer, artist, and publisher of his own series under the Abstract Studio imprint, Moore has built an entire career outside the major publishers, proving that intimate storytelling and deeply drawn characters could find a loyal readership in a market dominated by superheroes.

Strangers in Paradise, launched in 1993, is his masterwork. The series, spanning ninety issues published across several volumes through 2007, follows the complex story of Francine Peters and Katchoo Choovanski, two women whose lives interweave romance, thriller, and everyday drama. What sets the series apart is the psychological depth of its characters, the quality of its dialogue, and Moore's ability to move between social comedy and breathless suspense without ever sacrificing emotional authenticity.

Moore's visual style is elegant and expressive, with a particular gift for facial expressions and body language. His female characters are rendered with a realism and dignity rarely seen in comics, avoiding the hypersexualized tropes that dominate the industry. This approach earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards.

After Strangers in Paradise, Moore launched Echo (20082011), a thirty-issue science-fiction thriller about a woman fused with an experimental suit, followed by Rachel Rising (20112016), a forty-two-issue supernatural horror story. In 2016, he launched Motor Girl, then returned to the world of Strangers in Paradise with Five Years in 2018, tying all his universes together into a shared narrative he calls the Terryverse.

For collectors, Strangers in Paradise #1 from the original Antarctic Press run (1993, only three issues) is a genuine rarity with a limited print run. The regular Abstract Studio series, across its two volumes, is more accessible but equally rewarding. Omnibus and collected editions make excellent library additions. Moore is one of those creators whose work rewards patient collectors seeking substance over speculation.
