Jason Aaron was born on January 16, 1973, in Jasper, Alabama. Raised in the American South, he brought a raw and authentic voice to his writing, shaped by Southern literature as well as the comics of Garth Ennis and Frank Miller. After studying creative writing, he landed his first notable work at Marvel with The Other Side (2006), a critically acclaimed Vietnam War story, before being handed Wolverine (#56-61, then the relaunched series, 2008–2010) and the crossover Wolverine: Weapon X.
His first masterpiece at Marvel is Thor: God of Thunder (#1-25, 2012–2014, art by Esad Ribić), which follows three versions of Thor — a young Viking, a contemporary Avenger, and an aging king — facing Gorr the God Butcher, a divine serial killer that Aaron and Ribić created together. The character of Gorr, portrayed by Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), has become a major antagonist in the Marvel Universe. Aaron followed this with a long-running saga: in Thor #1 (2014, art by Russell Dauterman), Thor Odinson is deemed unworthy of Mjolnir, and Jane Foster — battling cancer — takes up the hammer to become the new Thor. This storyline, which continues through The Mighty Thor (#1-23, 2016–2017) and culminates in Jane's death and resurrection in The Mighty Thor #705–706, stands as one of the most ambitious arcs of the decade, weaving together mythology, medical drama, and heroism.
Alongside these runs, Aaron delivered a gleefully chaotic stint on Wolverine & the X-Men (#1-42, 2012–2014), centered on the Jean Grey School, and launched Star Wars (#1-34, 2015–2017), the first Star Wars title at Marvel following the acquisition of the license from Dark Horse. His Avengers run (#1-66, 2018–2023) develops sweeping cosmic myths around the earliest Avengers of the prehistoric age. At Image, Scalped (2007–2012, with R.M. Guéra), a thriller set on a Native American reservation, and Southern Bastards (2014–present, with Jason Latour) rank among the finest independent series of their respective decades.
For collectors, Thor: God of Thunder #1 (2012, first appearance of Gorr) is a major modern key issue, especially in the wake of the 2022 film. Thor #1 (2014, first Jane Foster Thor) and The Mighty Thor #1 (2016) are also on the rise. Star Wars #1 (2015), with its many variants, is a highly sought-after collectible. Scalped #1 and Southern Bastards #1 are prized on the independent market. Aaron continues to shape the Marvel Universe with a singular authorial vision, blending intimate storytelling with sweeping cosmic epics.
Jason Aaron redefined Thor for the 21st century and directly inspired the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his creations Gorr and Jane Foster Thor.
