Donny Cates, born July 6, 1991 in Texas, is the defining comics sensation of the late 2010s, a writer whose explosive style and flair for spectacle reinvigorated several major Marvel franchises. His meteoric rise from the indie scene to the top of the industry stands as one of the most remarkable careers of the past decade.
Cates first made his mark at Image Comics with God Country in 2017, a six-issue miniseries drawn by Geoff Shaw that blends Texan family drama with epic fantasy. The story of an elderly man with Alzheimer's whose clarity is restored by a magical sword strikes a universal emotional chord. Critical and commercial success was immediate, and the film rights were quickly optioned. God Country #1 saw its value explode on the back-issue market.
At Marvel, Cates launched with Thanos (#13–18, 2018), where he introduced Cosmic Ghost Rider — Frank Castle reimagined as a cosmic Ghost Rider turned herald of Galactus. The character, perfectly attuned to the meme era, spawned his own series and became a major collector phenomenon. Doctor Strange (#381–390) and Venom followed.
His Venom run, launched in 2018 with issue #1 drawn by Ryan Stegman, was a turning point for the franchise. Cates overhauled symbiote mythology by introducing Knull, the god of the abyss and creator of the symbiotes — a cosmic villain whose arc culminated in the King in Black event (2020–2021). Across five issues, King in Black saw Knull invade Earth while Eddie Brock ascended to become the King in Black, inheriting cosmic powers. The storyline elevated Venom to an entirely new level.
Cates then tackled Thor (#1–35, 2020–2022), introducing the Black Winter, and Hulk (#1–14, 2021–2023), in which Banner pilots the Hulk like a spacecraft in a wildly original science-fiction concept. His Image output also includes Buzzkill, The Paybacks, and Babyteeth.
For collectors, Venom #1 (2018) by Cates has become a major key issue of the modern era. Thanos #13 (first appearance of Cosmic Ghost Rider) is one of the hottest keys of recent years. God Country #1 in first print is highly sought after. Venom #3 (first appearance of Knull) is a modern grail. Cates is the writer who best understood how to generate collector value in the contemporary era.
His Venom run and the creation of Knull redefined symbiote mythology. His ability to turn ongoing series into must-read events makes him one of the most popular writers in Marvel today.
