Al Ewing, born on February 28, 1977 in Stoke-on-Trent, England, is a British writer whose mastery of Marvel continuity and the intellectual ambition of his storytelling make him one of the most respected authors of his generation. Trained in the British anthology 2000 AD, where he worked on Judge Dredd and other series, Ewing developed a remarkable ability to blend accessible storytelling with thematic depth.
His arrival at Marvel came in 2013 with Mighty Avengers, a series that spotlighted heroes of color such as Luke Cage and Monica Rambeau. But it was with Ultimates (2015–2017) and Ultimates 2 that he truly began to stand out, offering an ambitious cosmic vision of the Marvel Universe that recast Galactus as a creative rather than destructive force. His approach is deeply rooted in continuity while pushing it into uncharted territory.
Loki: Agent of Asgard (2014–2015) is another high point — a series exploring the identity reinvention of the god of mischief as a hero. Ewing deploys a rich metacommentary on the nature of storytelling and a character's capacity to transcend its narrative role, a theme that recurs throughout his body of work.
His undisputed masterpiece is Immortal Hulk, launched in June 2018 with issue #1, drawn primarily by Joe Bennett. Across fifty issues, Ewing transforms the title into a tale of body horror and metaphysical dread that reinterprets the entirety of Hulk's history through the lens of multiple-personality psychology and Kabbalistic mythology. The series was universally acclaimed and is considered one of the greatest Hulk runs since Peter David.
Ewing has continued his exploration of the Marvel Universe with Venom (#1–35, 2021–2023), which builds on Donny Cates's King in Black, and Defenders: Beyond, an experimental cosmic narrative. Every project demonstrates a unique ability to weave narrative threads across decades of continuity while delivering stories that remain accessible to new readers.
For collectors, Immortal Hulk #1 is the key issue of the late 2010s, with CGC 9.8 copies in constant demand. Loki: Agent of Asgard #1 has benefited from the success of the Disney+ series. Ultimates #1 (2015) remains an undervalued gem. Ewing is the writer who turns forgotten characters into essential ones.
Immortal Hulk redefined the character through the lens of cosmic horror, becoming a landmark run. His ambitious vision of the Marvel Universe establishes him as one of the most important writers of his generation.
