Let's be clear up front: there is no Spawn "Silver Age" issue. The comic Silver Age ended around 1970, and the Bronze Age in the mid-1980s. But Spawn #1 came out in May 1992 from Image Comics: the character belongs to the Modern era. The real key issues to chase are the 1990s first appearances — led by Spawn #1 (eBay median €15, 102 listings, June 2026) and Spawn #9, the first appearance of Angela.
This mix-up is common: collectors borrow the Marvel/DC grail vocabulary ("Silver Age key") and apply it to much newer characters. For Spawn, it simply makes no chronological sense.
This guide sticks to the verifiable: real-time eBay medians via our estimator, and documented facts. When a figure isn't reliable, we state it qualitatively rather than inventing it.
Why there is no Spawn "Silver Age"
Comic "ages" are chronological markers: the Silver Age runs roughly 1956 to 1970, the Bronze Age from 1970 to the mid-1980s, then comes the Modern era. Spawn #1 appeared in May 1992, created by Todd McFarlane: it's a founding Image Comics title, squarely in the Modern era. By definition, there can be no "Silver Age" or "Bronze Age" Spawn grail. If you want the real centerpiece issues, look to the early 1992–1993 numbers.

Spawn #1: the real "number one," not a Silver Age
This is THE founding issue. On release in May 1992, Spawn #1 sold roughly 1.7 million copies, making it the best-selling creator-owned comic of all time (source: Todd McFarlane / Image Comics statements). The direct consequence: it was printed in huge numbers, so the standard raw copy stays very affordable (median €15). The value concentrates on two things: high grade and the newsstand edition, which is notably scarcer — a newsstand copy in CGC 9.8 is documented around $367 (source: SellMyComicBooks).
Spawn #9: the first appearance of Angela
If any issue earns the "grail" label after #1, it's #9 (1993): the first appearance of Angela, co-created by McFarlane and writer Neil Gaiman (the same issue also introduces Medieval Spawn). The character became famous for two reasons:
- The rights dispute. Gaiman prevailed in the legal battle with McFarlane over ownership of Angela.
- The move to Marvel. The rights later migrated to Marvel, which folded Angela into its universe in 2013.
On value, #9 stays affordable raw (median €13), but high grade matters: the Overstreet 2021 guide valued NM- (9.2) at $34, and a CGC 9.8 copy was bidding around $92 in a Heritage sale (source: Bleeding Cool / Heritage Auctions).
Beyond the early issues: the Spawn record
Spawn has no Silver Age, but it holds a real record: with Spawn #301 (October 2019), the series became the longest-running creator-owned superhero comic, a title certified by Guinness World Records — surpassing the 300 issues of Cerebus (sources: Guinness World Records, Image Comics). For a collector, that means beyond the 1992–1993 keys, the series' depth offers many anniversary issues (#100, #200, #300) to explore.
Collector strategy (grounded in real data)
- Drop the "Silver Age" label. Focus on the real early issues from 1992–1993.
- #1 = the centerpiece, but aim for high grade or newsstand: the raw copy is too common to appreciate.
- #9 = the key character issue most sought after besides #1, thanks to Angela.
- Grade is everything. The medians above are from June 2026 and prices move — always check condition and live value before buying.
