Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Watchmen Collection

Watchmen #1 (September 1986, Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons, DC Comics) is the first issue of the mini-series that revolutionized comics. In Near Mint condition (CGC 9.4), it can be worth between $300 and $1,200. In Very Fine (8.0), between $100 and $400. CGC 9.8 copies sometimes reach $3,000โ€“$5,000. The complete series #1-12 in good condition is generally worth between $500 and $3,000 depending on grades.
Before Watchmen (2012-2013) is controversial among fans since Alan Moore opposed these prequels. However, from a collecting standpoint, some mini-series are beautifully drawn (notably Minutemen by Darwyn Cooke and Comedian by Brian Azzarello). They aren't essential for understanding Watchmen, but they do expand the universe. My Comics Collection imports each Before Watchmen mini-series separately.
Watchmen #12 (October 1987, last issue of the series) is paradoxically the hardest issue to find in good condition. Being the final issue, many readers read and reread it, wearing down the corners. A Near Mint copy is worth between $200 and $600. My Comics Collection lets you precisely track your ownership status for each issue in the series.
For reading, yes. For collecting, no. The Watchmen Trade Paperback or Absolute Edition are excellent reading formats. But the original issues #1-12 (1986-1987) have intrinsic value as historical artifacts that the collected edition cannot replace. My Comics Collection focuses on individual series issues (the 12 originals, the Before Watchmen issues) rather than collected formats.
Doomsday Clock (12 issues, Geoff Johns/Gary Frank, 2017-2019) is the official Watchmen sequel set in the DC Universe. It crosses the Watchmen characters with Superman and the Justice League. It's a controversial but officially canonical sequel. Serious Watchmen collectors include it in their collection. My Comics Collection imports this series separately.
The original Watchmen issues (1986-1987) have no cover variants โ€” DC wasn't producing them at that scale yet. However, the Before Watchmen issues (2012-2013) had 1:25 and 1:50 retailer variants. Modern reprints (facsimiles, Director's Cut) also exist in several formats. My Comics Collection lets you note the variants and special editions you own.
