Le Punisher (1974) is the archetypal antihero: a former soldier who wages war on crime without ever crossing the line of forgiveness. His best stories (the run MAX by Garth Ennis) are among Marvel's most adult. Venom (1988) accomplished the rare trajectory of villain-turned-star antihero. Dead Pool (1991), a mercenary fourth-wall breaker, established a unique meta tone. And Wolverine (1974), the clawed mutant with a troubled past, is perhaps the most popular Marvel character of his generation.
Tier A: the iconic antiheroes
Spawn (1992) is Image Comics' flagship Soldier Returned from Hell: one of the biggest independent hits in history. Ghost Rider (1972) makes a pact with the devil to punish the guilty. Catwoman (1940) has always oscillated between heist and heroism, one of DC's most nuanced characters. And Elektra (1981), a hitwoman linked to Daredevil, is a major creation by Frank Miller.

Moon Knight (1975), a vigilante with multiple personalities, is experiencing a second critical youth. Winter Soldier (2005), Captain America's former ally transformed into an assassin, embodies redemption. Old Man Logan (2008) is the twilight version of Wolverine. Tier C: safe values

Collecting an antihero calls for a precaution the ranking does not show: the date a character was born and the issue that serves as the reference do not always coincide. Here are the points to check before buying.
The first appearances in tier S
The Punisher appears in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974), as an adversary of Spider-Man before becoming a headline hero. Venom has a two-step path: a cameo in Amazing Spider-Man #299, then the full first appearance in #300 (1988). Deadpool is born in New Mutants #98 (1991). Wolverine makes a first appearance at the end of Incredible Hulk #180, then a full appearance in #181 (1974). In both cases, the difference between a cameo and a full first appearance weighs on what the market expects from a copy.
Antiheroes outside the two giants
Spawn #1 (1992) is the starting point of the series that made Image Comics a major publisher, and its creator Todd McFarlane is its common thread. Hellboy appeared in 1993 in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2, a promotional issue: here the first appearance is a niche object, while Mike Mignola's collected editions are the natural way in.
Alternate versions not to be confused
Old Man Logan is not "classic" Wolverine: he is a twilight future version, introduced in Wolverine (2008) by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven.
