Knightfall is one of the most ambitious and memorable crossovers in the history of Batman, and of DC Comics in general. Published in 1993 across several simultaneous titles, this three-part mega-event (Knightfall, Knightquest, KnightsEnd) broke Batman, replaced Batman, then restored Batman. It introduced Bane as a new-generation antagonist and raised enduring philosophical questions about what it means to be the Dark Knight. This guide gives you the complete reading order, the absolute key issues and their 2026 values.
Context: what made Knightfall revolutionary in 1993
In 1993, DC Comics was seeking to capitalize on the phenomenal success of The Death of Superman (1992-1993). The idea was to subject Batman to an event of similar scale — not death, but something equally radical. The editorial team, led by Denny O'Neil, conceived an antagonist capable of defeating Batman not through brute force alone, but through strategy.
Bane is that answer. Born in Peña Dura prison, he grew up in the harshest jails in the world, developing exceptional intelligence and strength. Enhanced by Venom, a drug that multiplies his strength, Bane is an adversary who knows Batman better than Batman knows himself. His strategy is devastatingly simple: first exhaust Batman by freeing all the criminals from Arkham Asylum, then fight him when he's spent.
The plan works to perfection. The moment Bane breaks Bruce Wayne's spine over his knee in Batman #497 remains one of the most shocking images in DC comic history. But the crossover doesn't stop there: it then explores who can take up the mantle, and whether anyone else can truly be Batman.
Part 1, Knightfall: the complete reading order
Knightfall is the first of the three parts. It covers Bane's strategy, Batman's exhaustion and the climactic moment of the break. Here's the precise reading order:
Reading order — Knightfall (Part 1)
- Batman #492, Bane frees the Arkham criminals (start)
- Detective Comics #659, The hunt begins
- Batman #493, The first confrontations pile up
- Detective Comics #660, Batman vs. Zsasz
- Batman #494, Encounter with Killer Croc
- Detective Comics #661, Escalation
- Batman #495, Batman vs. Poison Ivy
- Detective Comics #662, Confrontation with Mr. Freeze
- Batman #496, Batman vs. Joker and Scarecrow
- Detective Comics #663, Bruce's exhaustion
- Batman #497, Bane breaks Batman's back [ABSOLUTE KEY ISSUE]
- Detective Comics #664, Immediate aftermath
- Batman #498, Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael takes the mask
- Detective Comics #665, The new AzBat in action
- Batman #499, AzBat vs. Bane (round 1)
- Detective Comics #666, The confrontation sharpens
- Batman #500, AzBat defeats Bane [collector issue]
Batman #492 — First solo Bane appearance in a Knightfall context
This issue marks the crossover's official start with Bane methodically freeing all Arkham inmates. It's the staging of his plan. In CGC 9.8, Batman #492 is valued between $80 and $150 — a good entry point for collectors.
Batman #497 — The most sought-after issue
Batman #497 is the absolute key issue of the entire crossover. It's here that Bane lifts an exhausted Batman and breaks him over his knee, snapping his spine. The cover — Bane holding a broken Batman over his head — is one of the most famous in DC history. It has been reproduced, parodied and referenced hundreds of times.
In 2026, CGC values for Batman #497 are:
- CGC 9.8: $200 to $400
- CGC 9.6: $100 to $180
- CGC 9.4: $60 to $100
- Ungraded NM: $20 to $45
These values jumped after The Dark Knight Rises (2012), where Bane breaks Bruce Wayne's back in a scene directly inspired by the comic. A 2012-2014 peak was followed by a slight correction, but CGC 9.8 copies remained solid.
Batman #500 — The collector issue
Batman #500 is an anniversary issue where Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) confronts and defeats Bane in a Batman armor he has modified more lethally. It's the symbolic turning point of the crossover: Batman has won, but at the cost of a transformation of the Dark Knight's very identity.
This issue existed in several versions: standard cover, lenticular (holographic) cover, and die-cut cover. The lenticular version is the most sought-after. In CGC 9.8, Batman #500 (standard cover): $80 to $150. The lenticular version can reach $200 to $350 in CGC 9.8.
Note: Detective Comics #659 is often cited as Bane's first appearance in the main crossover. But Bane's very first appearance goes back to Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993), a one-shot published before Knightfall began. It's this issue — not the crossover numbers — that contains Bane's first appearance. In CGC 9.8, it trades between $300 and $600.

Part 2, Knightquest: two parallel branches
Knightquest is the longest and most complex part of the crossover. It divides into two narrative branches running in parallel: The Crusade (AzBat's adventures in Gotham) and The Search (Bruce Wayne and Alfred trying to heal him).
Knightquest: The Crusade
This branch follows Jean-Paul Valley (AzBat) in his problematic management of Gotham. Increasingly radical, he modifies the Batman armor to make it more lethal and progressively drifts from Bruce's values. These issues explore the fundamental question: what is Batman without Bruce Wayne?
Reading order — Knightquest: The Crusade
- Batman #501-508, AzBat settles in and progressively goes off the rails
- Detective Comics #667-675, AzBat's disturbing evolution
- Shadow of the Bat #19-20, #24-28, Additional Gotham perspectives
- Catwoman #6-7, Selina's interaction with the new AzBat
- Robin #1-7, Tim Drake navigates between the two Batmen
- Legends of the Dark Knight #59-61, Side-tales on the crossover's margins
Knightquest: The Search
Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne and Alfred set off in search of a legendary healer, Harold. This branch is less spectacular action-wise but essential for understanding Bruce's path to redemption. It takes place mainly in:
- Batman: Shadow of the Bat #16-18 and #21-23
- Catwoman #5-6
- Showcase '93 #7-8
Part 3, KnightsEnd: the return of Bruce Wayne
KnightsEnd is the crossover's conclusion. Bruce Wayne, healed, returns to reclaim his Batman identity. But Jean-Paul Valley doesn't yield easily. The confrontation between the two Batmen is the climax of the entire saga.
Reading order — KnightsEnd
- Batman #509, Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham
- Detective Comics #676, The confrontation between the two Batmen approaches
- Batman #510, The final battle
- Detective Comics #677, Denouement and transition
- Shadow of the Bat #29-30, Epilogue
- Legends of the Dark Knight #62-63, Final perspectives
- Robin #8, Tim Drake's perspective
- Batman #511, Title recovery (Prodigal begins)
Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 — The real Knightfall grail
Before diving into the crossover issues themselves, it's crucial to discuss Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993). This special one-shot, published two months before Knightfall began, contains Bane's official first appearance in DC comics.
It's the most valuable issue of the entire Knightfall saga, far more than Batman #497. In 2026, CGC values for this one-shot are:
- CGC 9.8: $300 to $600
- CGC 9.6: $150 to $280
- CGC 9.4: $80 to $150
- Ungraded NM: $25 to $50
These values exploded after The Dark Knight Rises. If you need to own only one issue from the entire Knightfall saga in CGC, this is it. Its long-term value is supported by the fact that Bane remains one of the most popular DC antagonists and is regularly evoked for future films or series.
Other key issues from the Knightfall period
Batman #500 lenticular variant
Already mentioned, this holographic (die-cut lenticular) cover was a technological innovation for the time. It's significantly rarer than the standard version and attracts collectors specializing in 1990s variants. CGC 9.8 value: $200 to $350.
Detective Comics #659 — Official Knightfall start
This issue marks the crossover's official start in the Detective Comics title. No major first appearance, but a foundational issue for completing the run. In CGC 9.8: $60 to $100.
Shadow of the Bat #16 — First appearance of injured Bruce
This Knightquest-branch issue contains one of the first important scenes of wounded Bruce Wayne trying to regain his strength. Less significant on the market but a solid part of the complete collection. CGC 9.8 value: $30 to $60.
Robin #1 (1993) — The Tim Drake miniseries
This Tim Drake miniseries, which partly takes place during Knightfall, saw strong revaluation after the announcement of a Robin series for the DCU. Robin #1 in CGC 9.8 reaches $60 to $120 depending on the variant.
State of the Knightfall market in 2026
The Knightfall market in 2026 is characterized by sustained demand for the absolute key issues (Vengeance of Bane #1, Batman #497) but a flat market for secondary crossover numbers. The main reason: Knightfall is still associated primarily with a film adaptation (Dark Knight Rises, 2012) that's now more than ten years old. Without a new adaptation announcement, secondary numbers have no immediate catalyst.
Conversely, any announcement of Bane in James Gunn's DCU would immediately trigger a surge on Vengeance of Bane #1 and Batman #497. These two issues are the most defensive plays of the entire saga for collector-investors.
Knightfall key-issues summary by buying priority
- Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1: 1st Bane appearance, absolute priority
- Batman #497: Bane breaks Batman's back, essential
- Batman #500 (lenticular): Collector anniversary issue
- Batman #492: Knightfall start
- Detective Comics #659: Detective Comics side start
- Batman #500 (standard): AzBat defeats Bane
- Robin #1 (1993): Interesting complement
- Batman #509-510, Detective #676-677: KnightsEnd
