To read Civil War in French, start with volume 1 of Panini's Marvel Deluxe collection, which brings together the seven issues by Millar and McNiven and New Avengers issues 21 to 25. If only the miniseries interests you, the 2020 Marvel Must-Have album or the 2022 Grandes sagas volume offers it on its own. The seven 2007 magazine issues remain the purists' route.
In France, Civil War is not one book but a constellation: monthly magazine issues, a tie-in album, a series of hardbound volumes, then two albums that keep only the heart of the story. Knowing which one to buy means knowing what you want to read around the seven main issues.
As always in this guide, only verified information (creators, issues, dates) is stated as fact; the analysis is our own, with no reproduction of protected pages or dialogue.
The original edition in brief
Civil War is a seven-issue miniseries published by Marvel from July 2006 to early 2007, with delays that stretched out the end of its run. Mark Millar wrote it, Steve McNiven drew it, Dexter Vines inked, Morry Hollowell did the colors and Chris Eliopoulos did the lettering. The plot sets the heroes against each other over a superhuman registration law, with Iron Man on one side and Captain America on the other.
The event spills beyond the miniseries: there are many tie-ins, among them Amazing Spider-Man #529 to 538, Fantastic Four #536 to 543, Captain America (volume 5) #22 to 25, Civil War: Front Line #1 to 11, Thunderbolts #103 to 105 and Fallen Son. This dispersion has direct consequences for the French editions: each publisher had to choose what to attach to the miniseries. For American reading and the issues that matter, see our guide to the Civil War key issues; here, it is the French material that concerns us.
The French editions, in order of publication
2006-2007: Panini's prologues and monthly magazine issues
Panini first published the prologues, between December 2006 and February 2007, including episodes of Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and New Avengers: Illuminati. The main series, titled Civil War, then came out in seven newsstand issues, one per month: the first in March 2007, the seventh in September 2007. The series record counts seven volumes, of forty-eight pages each.
The epilogues follow in October and December 2007, with Captain America #25, Civil War: The Confession and Fallen Son. The schedule has a consequence for the collection: an isolated issue only makes sense when placed back in this sequence, and the French series number does not always match the American number.
The run, as rendered by a collector's tracking list, is regular: episode 1 in March 2007, 2 in April, 3 in May, 4 in June, 5 in July, 6 in August and 7 in September. Each month therefore brings a single episode of the miniseries, which gives French reading a slower pace than American publication, which had nonetheless fallen behind on its last installments.
For anyone rebuilding the series, this schedule serves as a checking grid: seven issues, seven consecutive months, from spring to autumn 2007. A lot with a gap between two of these months is incomplete, whatever the condition of the issues present. The same list records, for each month, many tie-ins published in parallel in other magazines, which explains how a reader of the time could follow the event without ever buying these seven issues.
July 2007: the Marvel Monster Edition album
An album in the Marvel Monster Edition collection, dated July 2007, gathers American issues from 2006 linked to the event. A survey details its contents: Thunderbolts #103 to 105, Cable & Deadpool #30 to 32, Heroes for Hire #1 to 3 and Ms. Marvel #6 to 8. It is therefore not the miniseries but a volume of tie-ins; it matters not to confuse it with the miniseries, despite the title.
Marvel Deluxe: the reference series in hardbound volumes
Panini's Marvel Deluxe collection is the form most readers encounter. The volumes have been reprinted several times: bookseller listings mention first editions with a Michael Turner cover and much later editions, up to the eighth for volume 3 and the ninth for volume 2. The dates vary by listing; we therefore give none for this series.
The series includes a Prélude (Prelude) and then numbered volumes that follow the event and its main satellite series. The tables of contents published online do not agree from one listing to another, and we could not cross-check them against a publisher record: before buying a single volume, check its contents on the volume itself, which alone is authoritative. The Prélude poses one more difficulty, since it is numbered 0 or 7 depending on the databases.
A special issue reproduces a fake issue of the Daily Bugle, and a box set brought together volumes 1 to 3 in a print run limited to 999 copies, according to a collector's survey. These two objects are collection extras, not reading steps.
2020: Marvel Must-Have
On July 1, 2020, Panini published Civil War in the Marvel Must-Have collection: a hardbound album that reprints the seven miniseries issues, alone. Professional bibliographic data describe it as a hardbound format, about twenty-seven centimeters tall.
2022: Les Grandes sagas Marvel
On October 19, 2022, the Civil War volume of the Les Grandes sagas collection appeared from Panini. It reprints issues 1 to 7 of the miniseries, already published in the Marvel Must-Have album. The sources differ on the page count (144 pages for one record, 200 for two others) and on the volume number within the collection: we do not settle it.
US / French correspondence
| French edition | Publisher and year | US issues contained |
|---|---|---|
| Civil War, magazine issues 1 to 7 | Panini, March to September 2007 | Civil War #1-7, one episode per issue |
| Marvel Monster Edition: Civil War | Panini, July 2007 | Tie-ins: Thunderbolts, Cable & Deadpool, Heroes for Hire, Ms. Marvel |
| Marvel Deluxe, volume 1: Guerre civile | Panini, reprinted | Contents to check on the volume |
| Marvel Deluxe, volume 2: Vendetta | Panini | Contents to check on the volume |
| Marvel Deluxe, volume 3: La Mort de Captain America | Panini | Contents to check on the volume |
| Marvel Must-Have: Civil War | Panini, July 1, 2020 | Civil War #1-7 |
| Les Grandes sagas: Civil War | Panini, October 19, 2022 | Civil War #1-7 |
The table shows the essentials: only three forms contain the miniseries (magazine issues, Deluxe volume 1, two recent albums), while the rest of the material is spread elsewhere. That is why a complete French Civil War collection counts noticeably more objects than miniseries volumes.

Which edition to choose for your profile
You want to read the miniseries, nothing else. The 2022 Grandes sagas volume or the 2020 Marvel Must-Have album is enough: seven issues, a single object. You lose the New Avengers issues that extend the story, and you gain simplicity.
You want to understand the event. Take Marvel Deluxe volume 1, Guerre civile, which adds New Avengers #21 to 25, then volumes 2 and 3: they cover the most useful chronology, from Spider-Man to the death of Captain America. Volumes 4 to 6 are for those who want the whole periphery.
You collect the first French edition. Look for the seven Panini magazine issues of 2007, preferably complete. It is the only form that respects the original publication rhythm, and it remains that of a newsstand reader rather than an album buyer.
You come from the film. The 2016 film borrows the theme, not the story: our comparison of Captain America: Civil War and the comics explains what changes. A single-sitting album will be enough for you.
Pitfalls and points to watch
Marvel Monster Edition is not the miniseries. Its title invites you to think it contains the main story; it gathers tie-ins.
Numbering that changes. The Prélude volume is numbered 0 by some databases and 7 by others, and the Grandes sagas collection is given under two different numbers. Rely on the title and the contents, not on the display order.
Deluxe reprints. Volumes 2 and 3 have gone through many editions; the interior is the same, the cover and the edition statement change. If you are after the first printing, check the edition statement and the cover illustration before buying.
Page counts and contradictory records. One record gives 144 pages for the 2022 volume, two others announce 200. In the case of Deluxe volume 1, the 296-page figure comes from a single bookseller. When the figures diverge, count the pages of the copy in hand.
The epilogues are elsewhere. Captain America #25 and Fallen Son are not in the albums that reprint only the seven issues: they appear in Deluxe volume 3. Reading the album without it means stopping before the event's best-known consequence. See also our pointers on special issues and one-shots in French editions.
What these editions are worth as collectibles
The formats still available (Must-Have, Grandes sagas, recent Deluxe reprints) stay close to their original price: these are books to read, not investments. Demand on the secondhand market concentrates on three points: first printings of the Deluxe with the Michael Turner cover, the limited box set of volumes 1 to 3 and the complete series of the seven 2007 magazine issues.
To estimate one of these objects, the method is the same as for any French edition: identify the edition and printing, collect completed sales rather than listings, then adjust for the condition of the spine, corners and paper. For a lot of magazine issues, first check that none of the seven issues is missing. Each step is detailed in our method for estimating a French edition.
In other words, the value of a French edition of Civil War depends less on the story, which is well known and reissued, than on the scarcity of the precise object you hold.
Frequently asked questions
Volume 1, Guerre civile, of Panini's Marvel Deluxe collection: it contains the seven issues of Civil War and New Avengers issues 21 to 25. If you only want the miniseries, the 2020 Marvel Must-Have album or the 2022 Grandes sagas volume will do.
After the Prélude, read volume 1 Guerre civile, then volume 2 Vendetta and volume 3 La Mort de Captain America. Volumes 4 to 6 extend the event on the side of Front Line, the X-Men and Fantastic Four: they are optional, but useful if you want the whole periphery.
Seven issues for the main series, one per month, from March to September 2007 at Panini, each containing one American episode. The prologues came out from December 2006 to February 2007, and the epilogues in October and December 2007, in issues other than these seven.
No. According to a survey of contents, this July 2007 album gathers tie-ins: Thunderbolts, Cable & Deadpool, Heroes for Hire and Ms. Marvel. For the seven main issues, turn to the magazine issues, Deluxe volume 1 or the 2020 and 2022 albums.
Not in the albums that reprint only the seven issues. The Captain America #22 to 25 issues and Fallen Son are found in volume 3 of Marvel Deluxe, La Mort de Captain America, which also contains The Confession.
