Comic grading: why it matters for collectors

Professional grading of comics has become an essential part of the collecting world. Having a comic certified by a recognized grading service like CGC or CBCS authenticates its condition in an objective and standardized way. The assigned grade, on a scale from 0.5 to 10.0, directly determines the comic's market value. For serious collectors, grading is an investment that protects and enhances the value of their most precious copies.

Managing a graded comic collection requires rigorous collection tracking of certification numbers, grades received, label types, and any signatures. My Comics Collection offers a dedicated module for tracking graded comics that centralizes all this information and integrates seamlessly into the overall management of your collection. No more separate spreadsheets or side files to track your slabs.

Recording grading information

Supported grading services

My Comics Collection supports the main grading services on the market. CGC (Certified Guaranty Company), the world leader in comic grading, is naturally supported with all its specifics: Universal (blue), Signature Series (yellow), Qualified (green), and Restored (purple) labels. CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service), the main alternative, is also integrated with its own label types. PGX and other services are also available for complete coverage.

Grades and certification numbers

For each graded comic, you can record the exact grade assigned by the grading service, from 0.5 (Poor) to 10.0 (Gem Mint). The unique certification number is also stored, allowing you to quickly retrieve the official information for each slab. This data is essential for insurance, resale, and authenticity verification of your certified comics.

Tracking signed and autographed comics

Signed comics represent a category of their own in the collecting world. Whether signatures obtained at conventions, official signing sessions, or grading service Signature Series programs, each signature adds value and history to a copy. My Comics Collection lets you record every signature on your comics in detail and make them visible via collection sharing.

Signature details

For each signature, you can enter the signer's name, whether they are a writer, penciller, inker, or colorist. The signing date, location, and type of verification (witnessed, CGC Signature Series, private signature) are all details you can preserve in your digital collection. These details enrich your collection's documentation and facilitate the traceability of each signed copy.

Impact of grading on valuation

One of the great advantages of the My Comics Collection grading module is its integration with the valuation tool. When a comic is marked as graded with a certified grade, the price estimate is automatically adjusted to reflect the actual value of a comic in that precise condition. A comic graded 9.8 by CGC will have a significantly different estimated value than the same comic graded 7.0 or ungraded.

This precision in valuation is particularly important for collectors who own high-value copies. The price differences between grading tiers can be considerable, and having an estimate based on the exact grade of each slab gives a much more accurate picture in your collection statistics. This feature is also valuable for investment decisions: should you have a copy graded, and what is the minimum grade needed to make the process worthwhile?

My Comics Collection offers a special view that groups all your graded and certified comics in one place. This dedicated view displays grades, grading services, certification numbers, and signatures in a clear and organized manner. You can filter and sort your slabs by grade, grading service, series, or value. This specialized view is the ideal companion for collectors who own dozens of CGC graded comics and need a structured, professional collection tracker for their certified inventory.
