Why Detective Comics is the most ambitious collection any DC fan can undertake

๐Ÿฆ‡

1,000+ issues across 80+ years of publication

Detective Comics is the longest-running superhero series in history, published continuously since 1937. With over 1,000 issues, no standard tool can manage this efficiently. A spreadsheet crashes before you even import half of it.

๐Ÿ’Ž

Detective Comics #27: the most iconic comic

Issue #27 (May 1939, 1st appearance of Batman) is estimated between $1.5 million and $3 million. But other key issues (Detective #359 = 1st Batgirl, #474 = 1st Rupert Thorne, #880 = Snyder) are more accessible. Do you know their value?

๐Ÿ”„

The New 52 and Rebirth reboots

Detective Comics is one of the few series to have maintained its original numbering even through DC reboots. The numbering was reset to #1 in 2011 (New 52), then brought back to #934 in 2016 (Rebirth). Without an app, this discontinuity is a constant source of confusion.

๐Ÿ“š

Detective Comics or Batman? Both are essential

Serious DC fans follow both Detective Comics and Batman (the series). Managing two series of 1,000+ issues each is exactly why a dedicated tool exists.

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Detective Comics Collection

Detective Comics has been published continuously since 1937. The original series (vol.1) reached issue #881 in 2011 before being relaunched at #1 for the New 52 (2011-2016, 52 issues). In 2016, for Rebirth, DC resumed the historical numbering at #934 (52 issues + 881 = #933 + 1 = #934). The series has continued since. In total, more than 1,050 issues have been published. My Comics Collection imports each volume via GCD.
Detective Comics #27 (May 1939, Bill Finger/Bob Kane) is the first appearance of Batman and one of the most valuable comics in the world. Fewer than 100 copies are known to exist. In 2010, a VF/NM copy sold for $1.075 million. Current estimates for a Near Mint copy reach $3-5 million. It's an absolute Grail out of reach for most collectors, but you can still add it to your virtual collection in My Comics Collection.
DC Comics renumbered Detective Comics to #1 in 2011 for the New 52 reboot. This series ran for 52 issues (through #52 in 2016). Then for Rebirth, DC decided to restore the historical numbering, calculating that if the numbering had never been interrupted, the next issue would be #934. This decision was welcomed by collectors. My Comics Collection manages the three volumes separately.
The Scott Snyder and Jock run on Detective Comics (#854-881, 2009-2011) is considered one of the best modern runs on the series. It features Kate Kane/Batwoman and explores dark psychological themes. Issues #854 (first Batwoman in the series) and #880 (end of the run, "The Black Mirror") are the most sought after. In Near Mint, they are worth between $15 and $60 each. My Comics Collection imports this run as part of vol.1.
Detective Comics Rebirth begins with the James Tynion IV run (#934-981) which reintroduces a team around Batman: Clayface, Batwoman, Red Robin... It's a period highly appreciated by fans. Key issues include #934 (1st modern Batman Inc.), #940, and #1000 (anniversary issue with stories by multiple authors). Issue #1000 is worth between $10 and $50 depending on the cover. My Comics Collection manages all these issues.
A complete collection from issue #1 (1937) to the current issue is virtually impossible for most individuals: Golden Age issues (#1-233, 1937-1956) are extremely rare and prohibitively expensive. However, collecting certain eras is quite realistic: the Silver Age (#233-400), the Englehart/Rogers run (#469-479), the O'Neil/Adams run, the Snyder run (#854-881), and Rebirth (#934-present). My Comics Collection lets you track your progress in whichever eras you choose.
