What is CGC grading?
CGC grading (Certified Guaranty Company) is an independent third-party service that evaluates the condition of a comic book. Founded in 2000 in Florida, CGC has established itself as the global standard for comic book certification. Its equivalent for trading cards is PSA; for American comics, CGC is the benchmark trusted on every market.
The slab: preservation and certification
The CGC process results in the comic being encapsulated in a sealed, rigid, transparent plastic case called a slab. The slab protects the comic from any further handling and ensures that its condition can no longer degrade or be altered. A label visible inside displays the assigned grade, title, issue number, publisher, year, and a unique certification number.
The slab provides three fundamental guarantees to collectors and buyers:
- Authenticity: the comic is authenticated as an original, not a reproduction or counterfeit
- Certified condition: the grade reflects the actual condition assessed by experts, not the seller's subjective description
- Preservation: the comic has been protected in optimal conditions since certification
The CGC grading scale: from 0.5 to 10.0
The CGC grading scale is numerical, running from 0.5 (Poor) to 10.0 (Gem Mint). Each grade corresponds to a precise description of the comic's physical condition. Understanding this scale is essential for evaluating the value of a graded copy.
| Grade | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | Gem Mint | Absolute perfection, extremely rare even for modern comics |
| 9.8 | Near Mint / Mint | Near-perfect, absolutely imperceptible defects |
| 9.6 | Near Mint+ | Excellent condition, minimal defects visible only under magnification |
| 9.4 | Near Mint | Very good overall condition, slight binding imperfections |
| 9.0 | Very Fine / Near Mint | Very good condition, small defects visible to the naked eye |
| 8.0 | Very Fine | Good overall appearance, some handling marks |
| 7.0 | Fine / Very Fine | Good condition, slightly reduced gloss, light marks |
| 6.0 | Fine | Acceptable condition, visible defects but complete |
| 4.0 | Very Good | Significant marks, readable and complete |
| 2.0 | Good | Significant damage, interior pages intact |
| 0.5 | Poor | Heavily degraded, collected only for rarity |
CGC vs. CBCS: what's the difference?
CGC is not the only comic book grading service. CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service) is its main competitor and offers similar pricing. CGC remains the dominant standard: buyers place greater trust in CGC slabs, and eBay prices are on average higher for an equivalent CGC grade compared to CBCS. For high-value comics, CGC is the preferred choice.
Why get a comic graded?
The decision to submit a comic for grading is a cost-benefit calculation. CGC grading involves fees and having your comic tied up for several months. In return, it offers concrete advantages that justify the investment in the right circumstances.
Increase resale value
This is the primary reason collectors grade their comics. A CGC 9.8-graded comic can be worth 3 to 10 times more than an ungraded copy in the same estimated condition. The certification premium is particularly high for key issues, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, and high-print-run issues where buyers want to be certain of the condition.

Protect and preserve
The CGC slab offers optimal protection against humidity, UV light, handling, and aging. For valuable older comics, it is the best long-term preservation solution available. Unlike standard bags and boards that degrade over time, CGC slabs are designed for permanent preservation.
Authenticate signed copies
CGC offers a Signature Series (SS) program that allows a comic to be signed by its writer or artist in the presence of a CGC witness. The slab then carries a yellow SS label listing the signatories. SS comics can be worth significantly more than unsigned copies, provided the signature is from a recognized name in the industry.
Facilitate remote transactions
Buying an ungraded comic online requires trusting the seller's description. A CGC-graded comic eliminates that uncertainty: the grade is objective and verifiable via the certification number on CGC's website. This simplifies transactions on eBay, collector-to-collector sales, and international deals.
Which comics are worth CGC grading?
CGC grading is not cost-effective for every comic. The value differential between a graded and an ungraded copy must clearly exceed the total cost of grading (CGC fees + shipping + any customs charges). Here are the categories where grading makes financial sense.
Key issues in very good condition
Key issues are the primary targets for grading. A first appearance of an iconic character in very good condition is an obvious candidate: certification guarantees the condition and maximizes resale value. There is no point in grading a key issue in poor condition (estimated grade below 4.0) unless it is extremely rare.
Golden Age and Silver Age comics
Comics published between 1938 and 1970 are particularly susceptible to being counterfeit or restored. CGC certification distinguishes authentic copies from restored ones (blue label for unrestored, purple label for restored) and reassures buyers. The certification premium is consistently high for these periods.
Recent comics targeting a 9.8 grade
For modern comics published after 2000, grading is worthwhile primarily if you expect to receive a 9.8 grade. Below that, the certification premium generally does not justify the fees. The key is to buy your comics new in the best possible condition and submit them for grading quickly, before any handling.
Rare variants and limited print runs
Low-print cover variants (1:25, 1:50, 1:100 ratio variants), convention exclusives, and virgin covers benefit greatly from CGC certification. These issues are prime targets for counterfeiters, and buyers frequently require certification before purchasing a copy online.
Comics signed by recognized creators
If you have the opportunity to get a comic signed by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby (archive signatures), John Romita Sr., or other industry legends, the CGC Signature Series program lets you authenticate the signature and incorporate it into the certification. A CGC SS signature can multiply a copy's value by 3 to 10 times.
How the CGC grading process works
Submitting a comic to CGC grading involves several steps. The process takes time and comes at a real cost, but it is accessible to any collector.
Create an account on CGC (cgccomics.com)
Registration is free. You can opt for a CGC Member subscription that reduces submission fees and provides additional perks depending on the tier (Standard, Premium, Elite).
Choose the right grading tier
Each tier corresponds to a specific turnaround time and price. For modern comics valued under $200, the Economy tier is most commonly used. For older or high-value comics, Express or Walkthrough tiers are preferable.
Prepare and package your comics
Each comic should be placed in a poly bag with a rigid backing board. CGC provides detailed packaging instructions to prevent damage during transit. Inadequate packaging can result in a lower grade.
Ship to Florida (United States)
Shipping should be done via insured, trackable mail. Budget for round-trip shipping costs depending on the number of comics and the declared value. Always declare the actual value to be covered in case of loss.
Wait and track your submission
CGC offers online tracking of your submission at every stage of the process. Turnaround times range from 15 business days (Express) to 80 business days (Economy), not counting shipping transit time.

How My Comics Collection helps you track your CGC comics
Owning CGC slabs in your collection creates a specific tracking challenge: how do you integrate certified issues with a confirmed grade into your inventory and assign them the correct value? My Comics Collection solves this natively.
Enter the CGC grade for each slab
For each comic in your collection, My Comics Collection lets you indicate whether it is CGC-graded and enter its exact grade (9.8, 9.6, 9.4, etc.). The app immediately incorporates that grade when calculating the estimated value via eBay data, clearly differentiating between transactions on CGC-graded copies and transactions on ungraded copies.
Dedicated "CGC" view in your collection
My Comics Collection lets you filter your collection to display only your CGC slabs. This dedicated view gives you an immediate snapshot of the total value of your certified comics, their breakdown by grade and series, and opportunities to submit additional copies for grading.
Explore the full feature on the CGC & Signed page.
Integration with eBay valuation
The valuation feature in My Comics Collection differentiates eBay prices for CGC-graded copies and ungraded copies. For the same comic, you see the estimated value in "raw" (ungraded) form and the estimated value based on the CGC grade you entered. This lets you calculate precisely whether submitting a specific copy for grading would be financially worthwhile.
Track comics currently in grading
While a comic is at CGC, it is neither in your physical collection nor yet certified. My Comics Collection lets you mark a comic as "currently being graded" to track it in this intermediate state. Once the grade is received, you update its status and its value is recalculated instantly.
