The most sought-after modern Fantastic Four keys span three distinct periods: the Byrne era (1981–1986, including FF #244 at a €19 eBay median across 41 listings, 1st appearance of Nova as Galactus's herald), the Hickman run (2009–2011, including FF #587 — Human Torch's death — at a median of €17), and the 2018 Dan Slott relaunch (€9 median, 92 listings). The original Silver Age keys remain in a different price bracket — this guide focuses on the accessible modern market.
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby launched the Fantastic Four in 1961, laying the foundation of the Marvel Universe. But the series went through several major editorial renaissances that produced their own key issues — collectible comics at prices far more accessible than the Silver Age grails. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, released July 25, 2025 with Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards ($118 million domestic opening weekend), reignited worldwide interest in the franchise and pointed new collectors toward these modern eras.
This guide relies exclusively on verifiable data: eBay medians from our estimator (eBay.fr + eBay.com, June 2026) and documented editorial facts. When listing volume is too low for a reliable median (fewer than 15 listings), we flag it explicitly and rely on web sources instead.

The Byrne era (1981–1986): a second golden age
John Byrne took over as both writer and artist starting with Fantastic Four #232 (July 1981) through #295 (October 1986). His run is widely regarded as a second golden age of the title (GoCollect, Marvel.com). It produced several solid keys at accessible prices.
FF #244 (July 1982) — 1st Nova as Galactus's herald: Frankie Raye, Johnny Storm's girlfriend, volunteers to become Galactus's new herald to save Earth. It is a verified first appearance in a major cosmic role. Our estimator returns a median of €19 (high €40, 41 listings) — an active market for an accessible Bronze Age key.
FF #247 (October 1982) — 1st Kristoff Vernard: Titled "This Land is Mine!", the issue returns the throne of Latveria to Doctor Doom — and introduces Kristoff Vernard, Doom's adopted ward, who later becomes his would-be successor in issues #278–279. First appearance verified (Key Collector Comics, eBay). The eBay median is €22 across 25 listings, with a high of €33.
FF #243 (June 1982): Not a first appearance as such, but one of the most sought-after single issues of the Byrne run — Galactus versus Earth's heroes, with the Avengers and Doctor Strange guest-starring. The median of €28 across 35 listings makes it the highest-priced Byrne key on our all-grades estimator, a reflection of the lasting popularity of its iconic cover.
The Hickman run (2009–2011): cosmos and tragedy
Jonathan Hickman took over the series with Fantastic Four #570 (October 2009), with Dale Eaglesham and Steve Epting on art, through #588 (2011). His run introduces the Council of Reeds — a multidimensional council of alternate versions of Reed Richards — in that very first issue. A caution: our estimator has only 11 listings for #570, too few for a reliable median. Real value depends on grade and variant (black logo cover, signed slabs). Check GoCollect or Key Collector Comics for recent graded sales before buying.
FF #587 (March 2011) — Death of Human Torch: The conclusion of the "Three" arc sees Johnny Storm sacrifice his life in the Negative Zone. A major editorial event — announced in advance by Marvel — that led to the temporary cancellation of the title and the launch of FF (Future Foundation). Our estimator returns a median of €17 across 17 listings, with a high of €25. Variants (black polybag editions, CGC 9.8 copies signed by Hickman) carry documented premiums above these all-grade figures.
The 2018 Dan Slott relaunch
After several years of editorial absence tied to licensing tensions with Fox Studios, the main series returned in August 2018 under writer Dan Slott, with Sara Pichelli on art. This first issue — published under Marvel's "Fresh Start" initiative — marks the return of Reed Richards and Sue Storm, absent from the main Marvel universe since 2015. With 92 active listings and a €9 median, it is the most liquid modern issue in the series on eBay. The arc continues with Fantastic Four: Wedding Special #1 and the long-awaited Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters wedding ceremony in issue #5.
Collector strategy
- FF #244 = best key-to-price ratio in the Byrne era. Verified first appearance, accessible median (€19), liquid market (41 listings). A logical add for any Bronze/Copper Age FF collector.
- FF #570 requires extra due diligence. Fewer than 15 listings on our estimator: rely on GoCollect or Key Collector for recent CGC sales data before committing to a price.
- FF #587 — check the variant before buying. The black polybag edition and signed CGC copies carry premiums above standard newsstand copies — always verify the certificate when buying online.
- The 2018 relaunch #1 = the modern entry point. At a €9 median across 92 listings, it is the most accessible starting point in the series for a newer collector.
