It must then be corrected by the time, the distribution channel and the desired state. Without this correction, we are comparing figures that do not measure the same thing: a print from 1974 and a print from 2014 do not live in the same world of conservation.

What a census population measures — and what it doesn't know

The population of a gradation census is the counter of copies certified by a service, broken down grade by grade. This is valuable data because it relates to real copies, authenticated and graded according to a common scale. But it measures one very specific thing and ignores others, and confusing the two leads to costly mistakes. The census counts the copiessubject to gradation, not the copiesexisting. The mass of raw copies that lie dormant in collections, never sent to a service, remains invisible.

This invisibility varies greatly depending on the value. An expensive key issue is graded in a high proportion of its survivors, because certification unlocks a price premium that justifies its cost. From this difference arises the phenomenon of “graduation”, the point on the scale where the population falls suddenly from one notch to another. The grade just above this drop concentrates a rarity bonus, because it marks the limit beyond which survivors become rare. Identifying this threshold in the census is more useful than retaining the total population: this is where the difference in value comes into play between two copies that are completely opposite on the market but which the original print considered identical.

This relative abundance is also an asset: it creates a liquid market, with frequent sales, an active buyer list and readable prices. Value arises from the encounter between a constrained offerin the desired gradeand sustained demand, not scarcity alone.

An independent title with a small circulation that has become a cult classic has a moderate absolute rarity but an explosive demand: it is the demand that carries the price. A book with a low population but no catalyst remains “rare and illiquid”: to be avoided as a store of value, regardless of the beauty of its population figure.

Misinterpretations that ruin a rarity estimate

The first mistake is to confuse total population and relevant rarity. A reassuring overall population can mask a severe shortage above the desired grade; conversely, a “weak” population may only be weak because the number is too trivial to have it certified. We must always disaggregate by grade and ask ourselves at what level of quality the rarity really lies.

The second error is to take the census for a fixed inventory. It moves constantly: submissions inflate the counters, resubmissions count the same object twice, pressing transfers copies upwards. A “low” population observed today can fill up in a few months if an adaptation revives shipments. To treat a snapshot as a stable truth is to buy a rarity that evaporates as soon as attention shifts to the title.

The third mistake, the most serious for an investor, is forgetting about demand. Adding a small print run and a small population to mechanically deduce a high value, without verifying that there are buyers, produces unsaleable acquisitions.
