Collecting Cable requires a prior decision: aim for the character or the series. It's not the same expense — the run that contains his first appearance also houses a foreign key more sought after than his own. The character alone is cheap; the series is not.
This file has the reputation of being expensive. It is, but not for the reasons we think — and there is a way of putting it together that avoids most of the expense.
This guide therefore begins by separating what the market confuses.
Character or series: the decision that controls everything
It must be taken before the first purchase, because the two projects only partially overlap.
Collect the series means putting together a continuous run from the early 1990s. It's coherent, it's readable — and it forces you to acquire an issue whose value rests entirely on a character that isn't yours.
Collect the character means retaining the numbers where he is the subject: his arrival, his own series, the stories which establish his identity. The list is short and, with one exception, very accessible.
This guide recommends the second route to the vast majority of collectors, for an arithmetic reason: the first imposes an additional charge on the file which does not bring anything back.
What serial contamination entails
The mechanism deserves to be developed, because it is found elsewhere and is difficult to locate.
A run becomes expensive for three possible reasons: its subject, its creative team, or an isolated number it contains.
The third is the most misleading. It produces a run where ninety percent of the numbers are worth the price of paper, and where a single one concentrates most of the value — unrelated to the rest.
Two practical consequences arise from this.
The lots should be examined closely. A “complete run” offered at an attractive price has almost always been stripped of its expensive number. Check the exact list before any group purchase.
The run's ordinary numbers are excellent deals. They belong to a very drawn out period, no one searches for them in isolation, and they contain the entire story apart from one appearance.
The period 1990-1994: what you need to know about it
Most of the file belongs to a period with a particular conservation profile.
The print runs were considerable, a significant part of the production has never been read, and the supply in good condition remains abundant thirty years later.
Three rules follow for this segment.
Only the highest ranks count. A simply new copy has nothing distinctive about this period.
First look at the manufacturing. Cutting, centering, stapling: these are factory defects, and they are the ones that limit the grades of copies never handled.
Beware of second printings. Several key issues from the period exist in reprints with modified covers. They are legitimately collectible, but are not worth the original edition.
The numbers that explain the character
This is the best track on the record, and it's little known because it comes from the original series.
At the time of his introduction, the character has no established past. His identity — where he comes from, who he is related to — was established several years later, by other authors, in other titles.
These numbers do not appear in any key list, for a mechanical reason: they do not contain any first appearances. They contain a revelation, which the market does not know how to index.
They belong to the mid-1990s, an abundant period, and can be found at bargain prices.
This is the only place in this file where reading still provides a real advantage on the budget.
Spot serial contamination before buying
Since the mechanism is the central point of this issue, we might as well know how to detect it elsewhere - it is more common than we think, and it explains many prices which seem absurd.
Three signs reveal it, and they are verified in a few minutes.
A brutal price difference between neighboring numbers. On a consistent run, prices evolve gradually. When a number costs several times its immediate neighbors without difference in creative team or narrative importance, the cause is external to the story.
A title which served as a laboratory. The secondary series of a franchise are regularly used to introduce creations, because the risk is low. They therefore concentrate first appearances unrelated to their subject.
Systematically incomplete batches. When grouped ads for the same run all skip the same number, it's because it sells better alone.
The parade can be summed up in one sentence:before you buy a run, identify what's foreign about it. This changes the budget, and sometimes the decision itself.
The original run: what's really in it
A useful clarification, because the reputation of this run is based on two numbers and hides the rest.
The title changes name shortly after the character's arrival, and continues with the same team in direct continuity. This shift produces lasting confusion in the announcements: the issues before and after belong to the same story but have different titles, and are sold separately.
Pour un collectionneur, c'est une occasion. Issues from the period following the name change are exactly as central to the character — that's where he becomes the main subject — and they don't carry the premium attached to first appearances.
This corpus recommends starting there if the objective is to understand the character rather than owning a piece: a few dozen booklets, all accessible, and the full story of his taking office.
Should we graduate?
The first appearance: yes, but only in very high rank. During a period where good condition is the norm, grading is the only way to distinguish an exceptional example from an ordinary new example. Below, the operation costs more than it brings in.
Ordinary run numbers: no. Their interest is narrative, and their individual value does not justify any approach.
The revelations of the mid-1990s: no. Too abundant, and their value is documentary.
The own series from the 2000s and following: no. Recent and very popular.
Three strategies depending on the budget
Tight budget — the character explained. The mid-1990s reveal issues and subsequent clean series. You get what the character is, for a pittance.
Budget intermédiaire — l'arrivée. Add the first appearance in correct grade, and the regular numbers from the original run, which cost the price of the paper.
Comfortable budget — the room. The first appearance in very high grade, graduated. This is the only significant purchase in the file if we decide not to complete the series.
A note on the characters of 1990
This file belongs to a generation that the market treats in a very particular way, and which is worth situating.
These characters were created in a period when comics were sold as an investment. They therefore have, from the outset, a dual nature: editorial creations and financial products.
Three traits almost always characterize them.
An overproduced first appearance, therefore devoid of real rarity in good condition.
An identity established after the fact, because the priority was launch, not consistency.
A value backed by adaptations rather than a structural place in the catalog.
This corpus draws a constant orientation for this generation: buy these files outside visibility periods, pay only for the exceptional, and look for the substance in later issues — that's where it was added.
What clean series are worth
The character has had several titles to his name since the mid-1990s, and they occupy a thankless place: essential to understand him, without commercial interest.
This situation is common and rarely explained. It is based on a market rule that is worth stating:a series obtained late does not produce keys.
The valued numbers are those which contain a first time — appearance, costume, status. When a character gets his own series after having already inaugurated everything else, there is nothing left for him to inaugurate.
These titles are nonetheless the place where it is best treated. Freed from the need to present it, authors can finally write it.
For the collector, the conclusion is comfortable: these series come together almost entirely for the price of a single key issue, and they constitute the best content of the file. They will not increase in value — that is the only criticism that can be made of them, and it does not concern reading.
Summary: the minimum list
- New Mutants #87(1990) — the first appearance, in very high rank or in assumed correct rank.
- Ordinary numbers from the original run— the complete story, at the price of paper.
- The revelations of the mid-1990s— which explains the character, and which no one references.
- Later proper series— the character treated as an autonomous subject.
Around twenty issues, only one of which requires a budget decision. The rest is acquired over the course of opportunities, without arbitration or urgency.
