To read Batman: Year One in French, the Urban Comics edition "Année Un" from 2012 (144 pages) or its 2023 Nomad pocket reissue is enough for most readers. The collector of the first French edition will look for "Vengeance oblige", published in two parts by Comics USA in 1988. Older editions are judged title by title.
Four issues of a regular series, one writer, one artist: the story that fixed Batman's heroic beginnings has had as many titles in France as it has had publishers. "Vengeance oblige", "Année 1", "Année Un", "Year One": the same content circulates under different names, and that is precisely what makes finding an edition complicated.
As always in this guide, only verified information (creators, issue numbers, dates) is stated as fact; the analysis is our own, with no reproduction of protected artwork or dialogue.
The US original in brief
Batman: Year One was published by DC Comics in the Batman series, in issues 404 to 407, between February and May 1987. Frank Miller writes, David Mazzucchelli draws. There is therefore no miniseries and no issue number 1 specific to the story: the four chapters occupy the regular numbering of the monthly, which explains why bound editions appeared almost immediately to give it the form of a book.
The story follows Bruce Wayne's first year in costume and, in parallel, Lieutenant James Gordon's arrival in Gotham. The tone is more crime fiction than fantasy, and Mazzucchelli's line is restrained. That restraint has a practical consequence for you: no edition adds spectacular content, so the differences between editions come down to format, translation, color and accompanying texts. For the period and the stakes of the first chapter, our entry on Batman #404 details the original copy.
The French editions, in order of release
1988: "Vengeance oblige" at Comics USA
The first French translation appeared in 1988 under the title "Vengeance oblige", in the Super-Héros collection of Comics USA, a Grenoble publisher whose books were distributed by Glénat. The story is split in two: "L'Aube noire" for the first part, "Nuit blanche" for the second, the latter bearing number 8 in the collection according to the French national library record. The split does not necessarily follow the division into four American issues; we therefore do not state which chapter falls in which part.
For the collector, this is the reference object: a first French edition, in two pieces, both of which must be gathered to own the whole story. Sources diverge on certain details of these volumes, hence our caution about their page counts.
The national library record places the edition in Grenoble and files it in the Super héros collection, with the "Nuit blanche" part at number 8 in the series. For collection cataloging, it is the most reliable reference of the lot: an institution, a number, a year.
1989: the France Loisirs omnibus
In 1989, France Loisirs, a mail-order book club, brought the two Comics USA parts together in a single book, still under the title "Vengeance oblige". It was the first chance to read the story in one go in French. Do not confuse it with an ordinary bookstore edition: it belongs to club sales, a different channel, and its catalog entry should be checked separately.
Delcourt and the switch to the title "Année 1"
Delcourt took the story into its Contrebande collection, the same one that housed the complete edition of The Dark Knight Returns. Online cross-checks do not let us fix the year with certainty, which is one more reason to read the book's own page before buying: the printing year is printed in the legal pages.
Panini and Eaglemoss: the story under other banners
Panini offered the story under its original title, "Year One", according to bibliographic databases. Eaglemoss also included it in a newsstand collection that reprints emblematic DC stories in numbered volumes. Both editions exist according to the bibliographic databases we consulted, but we detail neither their exact year nor their contents, for lack of sufficient cross-checking.
2012: Urban Comics, "Année Un"
This is the current reference edition. Urban Comics published "Batman : Année Un" in 2012, at 144 pages, which matches the pagination of the American Deluxe-type edition. It was offered on its own and in a box set with the DVD of the animated film drawn from the story (our Year One film vs. comics comparison revisits that adaptation). Two identifiers circulate for that year: 9782365770484 in a bookseller's record for the book with DVD, 9782365771306 in a readers' catalog, which partly explains the confusion. Sources diverge on the host collection: some say DC Premium, others DC Essentiels, which may come from successive reissues under another label.
2022: the discounted summer promotion
In summer 2022, Urban Comics launched a selection of ten Batman stories at an entry-level price, aimed at new readers. According to the specialist press, "Année Un" was part of it, along with The Dark Knight Returns. This presentation aimed at getting readers into the character's universe, not at conservation: the goal was to put the title within reach of any reader.
2023: Urban Nomad, pocket format
In August 2023, Urban Comics released "Batman Année Un" in its Nomad pocket collection, 144 pages, alongside a second story titled "À la vie, à la mort". The format is that of a paperback: slightly smaller than the album, it slips into a bag. It is the most economical edition, provided you accept that the artwork is smaller.
One last reading note: whatever the edition, the story remains a short read, so tightly is it written. That puts the choice into perspective for a reader in a hurry, and places it where it really matters, with the collector looking for a specific date, publisher and condition.
A community catalog of readers lists ten editions of the story, from the first American volume of 1988 to the Panini, Eaglemoss and Urban Comics editions, and gives the Nomad as the most recent, with the same page count as the 2012 edition. The identification number of this Nomad is 9791026824893: useful for not confusing it with an earlier reprint.
US / French correspondence
| French edition | Publisher and year | US issues contained |
|---|---|---|
| "Vengeance oblige", two parts | Comics USA, 1988 | Batman #404 to #407, split across the two parts |
| "Vengeance oblige", omnibus | France Loisirs, 1989 | Batman #404 to #407 |
| "Batman : Année Un", 144 pages | Urban Comics, 2012 | Batman #404 to #407 |
| "Batman Année Un" (Nomad), 144 pages | Urban Comics, 2023 | Batman #404 to #407, plus a second story |
We deliberately leave the Delcourt, Panini and Eaglemoss editions out of this table: their existence is attested, their detail is not. In every case the heart of the book is the same, four chapters from 1987, and only the packaging changes.

You simply want to read the story
Take the 2012 Urban Comics edition if you can find it, or the 2023 Nomad if you prefer the pocket format and a second story as a bonus. Neither requires any prior knowledge of Batman. If you are unsure about the reading order of Frank Miller's books, our guide Frank Miller: where to start puts Year One first.
You collect first French editions
Aim for Comics USA 1988, both parts, looking for the Super-Héros collection. Check that the two pieces complete each other: "L'Aube noire" and "Nuit blanche". A single copy is worth less than a pair, and the condition of spines and corners, which shows thirty-seven years of handling, should be checked from photos. The 1989 France Loisirs omnibus is an interesting complement, not a substitute.
You like large formats
Among the editions we were able to confirm, none presents itself as a very large "Absolute"-type format. If that positioning interests you, compare the 2012 Urban edition with the American editions rather than with the older French ones. For the context of luxury formats, see our analysis of the American versions in the Year One value guide.
Pitfalls and points to watch
- The title changes, the content does not. "Vengeance oblige", "Année 1", "Année Un" and "Year One" all refer to the same story. Do not buy twice by mistake: check the authors' names, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, and the mention of the four issues.
- The 1988 parts are not independent. One part without the other gives only a portion of the story.
- Box set with film. The 2012 edition exists alone or with the DVD; the version with the disc is bulkier and not necessarily more complete in pages.
- The Nomad's second story. It is not by Miller. Do not mistake it for a sequel to Year One.
- Differently labeled collections. For the same release, databases cite DC Premium or DC Essentiels. Trust the object in hand rather than the listing.
If you come across a listing for "Year One #1", know that the story has no issue number 1 of its own. Our entry on issue 404 explains what you should actually look for in the US original, and our guide to buying French editions at flea markets gives the habits for on-the-spot inspection.
What these editions are worth in a collection
The value of these books rests on three factors: rarity, condition, completeness. The 1988 editions have age going for them and the fact that they come in two pieces; the 1989 omnibus comes next as a single-book alternative. The 2012 and 2023 Urban editions are bookstore books that are still widely available: they trade as reading copies, with no rarity premium.
To estimate a piece, compare the asking price with that of completed sales of the same edition, not of another under a similar title. The gap between a copy in good condition and a fair one is generally wider for a 1988 volume than for a recent book, because paper and spines age. A still-sealed box set with disc is valued differently from a book alone. Our Batman: Year One value guide details the method on the US side, which also applies to French editions for sorting by condition.
Frequently asked questions
It dates from 1988 at Comics USA, under the title "Vengeance oblige", in two parts: "L'Aube noire" and "Nuit blanche". The national library record confirms the second part in the Super-Héros collection. A single-volume omnibus followed at France Loisirs in 1989.
Yes, it is the same story by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli that appeared in Batman #404 to #407 in 1987. "Year One" is the original title, "Année Un" the translation chosen by Urban Comics. Other French editions used a different title, such as "Vengeance oblige".
144 pages, according to several bibliographic records, which matches the pagination of the American Deluxe-type edition. It was offered on its own or with the DVD of the animated film. Sources diverge on the collection (DC Premium or DC Essentiels).
No. The August 2023 pocket volume, at 144 pages, pairs "Batman Année Un" with a second story titled "À la vie, à la mort". That second story is not by Frank Miller; check the authors' credits on the back before buying if this matters to you.
It is not required; the two can be read separately. Year One tells of Batman's beginnings, The Dark Knight Returns of an aging Bruce Wayne. Many readers start with Year One, which is shorter and more accessible, as our guide on Frank Miller suggests.
