Why even a linear series like Saga creates organization headaches

๐Ÿš€

Publication hiatuses make you lose your place

Brian K. Vaughan regularly takes long breaks (over a year in 2018-2022). After a hiatus, do you remember exactly where you stand? What was the last issue you own? What's the next one?

๐Ÿ’ธ

Saga #1 and the first print

Saga #1 (March 2012, BKV/Fiona Staples) in first print is worth between $100 and $500 depending on condition. But distinguishing a 1st print from a reprint isn't always obvious without precise documentation.

๐ŸŽญ

Variants and special editions

Limited-run variants have been published for certain milestone issues (Saga #25, #50). Retailer-exclusive editions and variant covers are hard to track without a dedicated app.

๐Ÿ“š

TPBs vs individual issues: do you have both?

Many Saga readers own the Trade Paperbacks AND some individual issues. Without centralization, it's impossible to know exactly which individual issues you're missing for the complete series.

My Comics Collection: your Saga collection always up to date

Without My Comics Collection
  • โœ—Notebook or spreadsheet impossible to keep updated after hiatuses
  • โœ—Can't distinguish a 1st print from a reprint

  • โœ—Total Saga value unknown
  • โœ—No arc-by-arc view

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Saga Collection

Saga #1 (March 2012, Brian K. Vaughan/Fiona Staples) first print is identifiable by the absence of the "Image Comics" logo in the top right on the back cover (reprints have it). In Near Mint, a first print is worth between $100 and $500. In Very Fine, between $50 and $200. Image has reprinted Saga #1 many times, so many copies on the market are reprints worth $3โ€“$10. My Comics Collection lets you record which printing you own.
Saga resumed in January 2022 after a long hiatus (since July 2018). The series now publishes bi-monthly in 6-issue arcs, with breaks between each arc. As of this writing, the series is at chapter 9+ (#55+). Brian K. Vaughan has indicated the series has a planned ending. My Comics Collection is regularly updated via GCD to include new issues.
Yes, Image Comics regularly publishes retailer variants for milestone Saga issues. Saga #1 has had several numbered reprints (2nd print, 3rd print, etc.) identifiable by color bands. Exclusive variants were published for conventions (SDCC, NYCC) and specific comic shops. Saga #25 had a controversial nude variant. My Comics Collection lets you record the edition type of each issue.
Saga publishes in 6-issue arcs, each arc then compiled into a Trade Paperback. Arc 1 (#1-6) introduces Marko, Alana, and Hazel. Subsequent arcs develop supporting characters (The Will, Lying Cat, Prince Robot IV). Major publication breaks correspond to arc endings. My Comics Collection lets you track your progress arc by arc.
My Comics Collection focuses on individual issues via the Grand Comics Database. Saga TPBs (Vol.1 = #1-6, Vol.2 = #7-12, etc.) are not listed as such. But you can check the corresponding individual issues. If you own TPB Vol.1, check issues #1 through #6 โ€” the app will correctly calculate your progress in the series.
Image Comics has published Saga Deluxe Hardcovers covering the early years of the series. These oversized, hardcover editions with bonus content are highly prized by collectors. There is also a "Compendium" format covering the first arcs. For individual issues, "FCBD Special" (Free Comic Book Day) and convention variants are collectible pieces. My Comics Collection tracks individual issues of the regular series.
