The black cover trap:The all-black cover of Lethal Protector #1 shows the slightest defect: fingerprints, scratches, printed dust, irregular ink. Getting a 9.8 is proportionately more difficult than for a light cover comic. This explains the high premium of 9.8s compared to 9.6s.

The Gold Variant: detailed analysis

The gold variant of Lethal Protector #1 is the centerpiece for Venom collectors:

Identification:The cover is completely metallic gold with the Venom design embossed. The "Venom" logo is printed in bright gold ink. The effect is visually striking.

Draw:Estimated at around 100,000-200,000 copies (vs. 1.5 million for the black cover). Significantly rarer but not truly limited.

Specific grade problem:The metallized surface is extremely sensitive to microscopic scratches and fingerprints. Many examples that appear mint to the naked eye receive grades 9.4-9.6 due to micro-scratches visible only under raking light. A real 9.8 gold is a trophy piece.

Gold + Newsstand:The gold + UPC barcode combination is the rarest and most expensive variant. Very few copies were distributed via kiosks in gold version. In CGC 9.8, it is a four-digit number.
