Major characters from the Spawn universe:Al Simmons (Spawn), Angela (Angelic Warrior), Medieval Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, She-Spawn (Jessica Priest), Violator/Clown, Sam Burke & Twitch Williams. Spin-off series: Curse of Spawn, Sam & Twitch, Spawn: The Dark Ages, Gunslinger Spawn, King Spawn.
The Spawn universe, created by Todd McFarlane in 1992 at Image Comics, is one of the largest in independent comics. For more than 30 years, the main series has been breaking longevity records for a creator-owned title, exceeding 350 issues, while an entire ecosystem of spin-offs explores the different facets of this infernal universe.
For the collector, Spawn offers immense terrain: the main series is a marathon, but the spin-offs and the first appearances of secondary characters represent targeted collection opportunities that are often undervalued compared to the Big Two.
The main antagonists
Violator / Clown
The demon Violator, disguised as an obese clown, is Spawn's most recurring enemy. Introduced in Spawn #1, he had his own mini-series (Violator #1-3 by Alan Moore). His first appearance in Spawn #1 and his demonic form revealed in Spawn #2 are founding issues of the collection.
Malebolgia and the infernal forces
Lord of the Eighth Circle who transformed Al Simmons into a Hellspawn, Malebolgia is the mythology's original antagonist. The issues covering his final confrontation with Spawn are major story arcs to own.
Alternative Spawns
Medieval Spawn
Sir John of York, medieval Hellspawn, appears in Spawn #9. The mini-series Medieval Spawn/Witchblade and the recent Medieval Spawn/Spawn: The Dark Ages develop this character at the crossroads of horror and medieval fantasy.
Gunslinger Spawn
Jericho Stone, Hellspawn of the Wild West introduced in Spawn #174, got his own series in 2021. Gunslinger Spawn is part of the new wave of titles released for McFarlane's expanded "Spawn Universe."
She-Spawn (Jessica Priest)
Jessica Priest, who murdered Al Simmons before becoming She-Spawn, received her own series in 2022. Her evolution from villain to anti-heroine provides an interesting modern collector's arc.
The essential spin-offs
Sam & Twitch
Detectives Sam Burke and Twitch Williams, recurring secondary characters in the main series, had their own title (Sam & Twitch, 2000-2004) focused on crime noir. These numbers are often accessible and underrated.
Angela — from the Spawn Universe to Marvel
Created by Neil Gaiman in Spawn #9, Angela is a unique case: after a historic trial, the character was sold to Marvel and integrated into Guardians of the Galaxy and then into the Thor universe. Spawn #9 remains a key issue sought after by collectors of both publishers.
Curse of Spawn and King Spawn
Curse of Spawn (1996-1999, 29 issues) explores the fringes of the infernal universe. King Spawn, launched in 2021, marks the revival of the Spawn Universe with a more epic direction. These titles ideally complement the main series.
Collection strategy
Spawn #1 (1992) is accessible due to its massive circulation (1.7 million copies), but the high conditions (9.8) remain valued. Target Spawn #9 (Angela), the first issues of each spin-off, and recent issues of the Spawn Universe in first print. The length of the main series means prioritizing key arcs.
