Major spin-offs: Lucifer, The Dreaming, Dead Boy Detectives, Sandman Mystery Theater.

The Sandman universe, created by Neil Gaiman from 1989 at DC/Vertigo, constitutes one of the most ambitious narrative structures in comics. Centered on Morpheus/Dream of the Endless, this mythological universe blends folklore, literature, and horror in a web of interconnected narratives that spans decades of publication.

For the collector, Sandman represents territory that is both prestigious and complex. The original 75-issue series is a mainstay, but the extended universe — Vertigo spin-offs, mini-series, and the recent return to DC Black Label — offers many complementary collectible avenues.

The Endless — the cosmic family

Seven anthropomorphic entities embodying fundamental concepts, the Endless form the mythological heart of the universe. Each member left their indelible mark on the series.

Death — the beloved sister

Appearing in Sandman #8 (the first issue to explode in popularity), Death has become a cultural icon. His solo miniseries — Death: The High Cost of Living and Death: The Time of Your Life — are popular Vertigo collectibles.

Desire, Despair and Delirium

The twins Desire and Despair embody the moral ambiguity of the universe. Delirium (formerly Delight) brings the most unpredictable dimension. Their major appearances in the "Brief Lives" and "The Kindly Ones" arcs are essential for any collector of the complete series.

Destruction and Destiny

Destruction, the absent Endless who abandoned his kingdom, is central in the “Brief Lives” arc (#41-49). Destiny, the elder carrying the Book in Chains, appears more sporadically but still significantly.

Major spin-offs

Lucifer — the fallen angel solo

Launched in 2000 by Mike Carey and Peter Gross, Lucifer (75 issues) directly continues the story of Sandman. Lucifer Morningstar, who abandons Hell in Sandman #23, leads his own cosmic epic there. The series was relaunched in 2018 by DC Black Label.

Dead Boy Detectives

Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, schoolboy ghost detectives introduced in Sandman #25, have had several series of their own. Their first appearance has been an increasingly popular number since the television adaptation.

The Dreaming and other expansions

The Dreaming (1996-2001, then revived in 2018), Sandman Mystery Theater, and Thessaly: Witch for Hire expand the universe. The recent Sandman Universe titles from DC Black Label (The Dreaming, House of Whispers, Books of Magic, Lucifer) form a new collectible cycle.

Collection strategy

The main series Sandman #1-75 in first print remains the essential base. Sandman #1 (first appearance of Morpheus) and #8 (first Death) are the two most valued issues. Complete with the Vertigo spin-offs for an exhaustive universe. The Absolute Sandman hardcover editions offer a prestige alternative for purists.
