Essential characters from the Iron Man universe:War Machine (James Rhodes), Rescue (Pepper Potts), the Mandarin, Ironheart (Riri Williams), Justin Hammer, Obadiah Stane, Crimson Dynamo, and the multiple Stark armors — a technological universe where each armor evolution marks a key moment for collectors.
The Iron Man universe is inseparable from Stark Industries and the perpetual technological race between Tony Stark and his adversaries. Since Tales of Suspense #39 (1963), each new armor, each ally and each enemy has enriched a mythology centered on innovation and its dangers.
For the collector, the Iron Man universe offers a unique feature: key numbers are often linked to the appearance of new armor or technology, creating distinctive visual cues. From War Machine to Ironheart, the heirs of the Stark mantle are multiplying the collection opportunities.
Major villains and their first appearances
The Mandarin
Stark's ultimate nemesis, the Mandarin appears in Tales of Suspense #50 (1964). His ten cosmic rings make him the perfect technological-mystical adversary. This Silver Age issue is a major issue in the Iron Man collection.
Obadiah Stane (Iron Monger)
Stane debuted in Iron Man #163 (1982) and became Iron Monger in #200 (1985). This last issue, which also marks the return of Tony in the armor, is a highly sought-after double key issue since the first MCU film.
Justin Hammer and Crimson Dynamo
Justin Hammer appears in Iron Man #120 (1979) during the "Demon in a Bottle" arc. The first Crimson Dynamo debuts in Tales of Suspense #46 (1963), representing the technological Soviet threat of the Cold War era.
Allies and heirs
War Machine (James Rhodes)
Rhodey appears in Iron Man #118 (1979) and dons the Iron Man armor in #170 (1983). He officially becomes War Machine in Iron Man #284 (1992). The solo series War Machine (1994-1996) completes its mythology.
Rescue (Pepper Potts)
Pepper Potts has been around since Tales of Suspense #45 (1963), but her Rescue identity doesn't arrive until Invincible Iron Man #10 (2009) by Matt Fraction. A modern number whose value exploded after Avengers: Endgame.
Ironheart (Riri Williams)
Riri Williams appears in Invincible Iron Man #7 vol.3 (2016) by Brian Michael Bendis. A young genius who builds her own armor, she gets her solo series in 2018. First issue constantly increasing.

Collection strategy
Tales of Suspense #39 is the ultimate but very expensive grail. Focus on Iron Man #128 (iconic “Demon in a Bottle” cover), #282 (War Machine) and the still accessible Fraction and Ellis runs. Issues related to early armor appearances (Hulkbuster in #304, Bleeding Edge in Invincible IM #25) are smart targets. Explore our guides onIron Man key numbersand thetitle history.
