The Kingpin's best arcs: Born Again in the lead

This character has one particularity that decides everything: he almost never fights. His best stories are therefore not confrontations but operations— shots executed over several issues, the extent of which we only understand at the end.

This characteristic explains why it works better in a long arc than in a single appearance. A single act cannot show what it does; you need duration.

1. Born Again (Daredevil #227-233, 1986)

Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. The arc everyone cites, and rightly so.

The Kingpin obtains the secret identity of his opponent. Rather than killing him – which would be quick and pointless – he undertakes to take your life apart: his bank accounts are frozen, his job disappears, his home burns down, his professional reputation collapses. All by perfectly legal or undetectable means.

What makes this arc superior is that it makes the method visible. We finally understand why this character is dangerous: not because he is strong, but because he has levers that a masked vigilante cannot reach.

It is also, incidentally, one of the best constructed stories in the medium, all characters combined. It can be read without any prior knowledge.

2. Gang War (Amazing Spider-Man #284-288, 1987)

A war of succession in New York crime, where the Kingpin intervenes as arbiter.

The interest of this arc is that it shows the character in his real job: manage competitors, arbitrate conflicts, preserve a structure. The hero is almost an observer.

It's the best story available for understanding what the Kingpin was before Miller made him a tragic figure — and it's aged remarkably well.

3. Underboss (Daredevil vol. 2 #26-31, 2001)

Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. The Kingpin is overturned by his own subordinates.

The arc reverses the usual device: instead of observing a man who controls everything, we observe a man who loses everything, and whose weaknesses we discover at the moment when they are exploited.

It is also the starting point of the character's densest run. From here, five years of stories follow one another without respite.

4. Hardcore (Daredevil vol. 2 #46-50, 2003)

The reconquest. After his fall, the Kingpin methodically returns to take back what belonged to him, and the arc culminates in a direct confrontation which redefines the relationship between the two characters.

Bendis demonstrates something important: what makes this character inexhaustible is that he can be beaten without being eliminated. He does not die, he withdraws — and returns.

5. Devil's Reign (2021-2022)

Chip Zdarsky. Having become mayor of New York, the Kingpin banned vigilantes and used the police and the law to track them down.

The character's logical outcome: if his true power was always respectability, then election was his destination. The arc closes a circle opened in 1967.

How to read these arcs

If you only read one thing: Born Again. It's a seven-issue standalone story, constantly reissued, and one of the few in the medium that we can recommend to someone who doesn't read comics.

If you want to understand the character: First Gang War (what it was), then Born Again (what it became), then Devil's Reign (where that leads). Three arcs, three decades, a coherent trajectory.

If you want the densest version: the Bendis-Maleev run in its entirety, of which Underboss and Hardcore are the peaks.

Collection side

These bows are collected in two ways, and the choice deserves to be made clearly.

En collections, the whole thing can be obtained for a modest budget and can be read in good conditions. This is the recommended route for those who want to read first.

En booklets, only a few issues really justify the effort: the openings and conclusions of arcs, plus the issues bearing a first appearance. The rest belong to well-preserved periods when supply is abundant and demand low.

As always, condition and gradation determine value; relying on real recent sales is strongly recommended.
