Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man(PPSSM) is the second regular series devoted to Spider-Man, launched in December 1976 to capitalize on the popularity of the character. For 22 years and 263 issues, it ran alongside Amazing Spider-Man, often offering more introspective stories and arcs focused on Peter Parker's personal life.

In 2026, Spectacular Spider-Man keys are generally underpriced compared to their Amazing Spider-Man counterparts, making them an interesting hunting ground for collectors looking for bargains. Several issues contain major first appearances that rival ASM key issues in importance.

Spectacular Spider-Man #1 (December 1976)

The first issue of the series, written by Gerry Conway with art by Sal Buscema, established the more personal tone of the series. Spider-Man takes on the Tarantula in a story that focuses on the Peter/New York City dynamic.

Spectacular Spider-Man #64: First appearance of Cloak & Dagger

PPSSM #64 (March 1982) is the most valuable key issue in the series after #1. It contains the first appearance of Cloak (Tyrone Johnson) and Dagger (Tandy Bowen), a duo of vigilantes who later got their own series and a TV adaptation (Freeform, 2018-2019).

Why this number is important:Cloak & Dagger have become recurring characters in the Marvel Universe, appearing in numerous series. Their first appearance in a Spider-Man title gives it dual demand (Spider-Man collectors + C&D collectors).

Newsstand vs Live:In 1982, the ratio was still largely in favor of newsstand (~70/30), so the newsstand premium is minimal for this issue.

Spectacular Spider-Man #90 and the Black Suit

PPSSM #90 (May 1984) is the first issue of this series to feature Spider-Man in his black symbiote suit. Al Milgrom's cover shows the new black look:

This issue is a natural complement to ASM #252 and Secret Wars #8 for collectors documenting the Black Suit Saga across all concurrent Spider-Man series.

Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132: Kraven's Last Hunt

The "Kraven's Last Hunt" arc (1987) by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck is considered one of the best Spider-Man stories ever written. This arc takes place across the three concurrent series (ASM #293-294, PPSSM #131-132, Web #31-32):

With the film Kraven the Hunter (Sony, 2024) and the growing cultural importance of this story, Kraven's Last Hunt numbers are trending upward. The narrative density and artistic quality justify above-average prices for issues from this period.

Spectacular Spider-Man #200: death of Harry Osborn

PPSSM #200 (May 1993) contains the death of Harry Osborn (Green Goblin II), Peter Parker's best friend. This is one of the most emotionally powerful moments in Spider-Man continuity:

Special coverage:#200 has a hologram/die-cut cover which makes it visually spectacular. As with all special cover issues from the 90s, the holographic surface is susceptible to scratches which prevent the 9.8.
