Publication context

In 1974, the Bronze Age was in full swing at Marvel. The characters gain in psychological complexity and social themes appear on the pages. Gerry Conway, then head writer of Amazing Spider-Man at just 21 years old, wanted to introduce a morally ambiguous character — a vigilante who kills. Conway's original idea was inspired by the novelThe Executionerby Don Pendleton. John Romita Sr. designs the visual design of the white skull on a black background, which has become one of the most recognizable logos in pop culture.

Points of vigilance when purchasing

Recurring problems with this number:Marvel Value Stampscut on the inside page (Shanna's stamp #54 must be present), vertical binding folds (spine stress), discoloration of the yellow background of the cover, and undeclared restoration on the corners. Always check for the presence of the stamp — a cut copy loses 60 to 70% of its value. Choose CGC or CBCS copies to secure your investment.
