Batman Adventures #12(September 1993) — Paul Dini & Bruce Timm — DC Comics. First appearance of Harley Quinn in comics (after her debut in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992). CGC 9.8 value: ~$40,000. CGC 9.6: ~$15,000.

September 1993. A character created for a cartoon episode makes his comic book debut and will become one of the most popular DC characters of the modern era. Batman Adventures #12 marks the first comic book appearance of Harley Quinn — psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel, who fell in love with the Joker at Arkham Asylum. Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for Batman: The Animated Series a year earlier, she conquered the paper medium with this issue which became a Holy Grail of the modern era.

What makes Batman Adventures #12 fascinating to the collector is that it is an "all-ages" title based on a cartoon — a type of publication historically overlooked by serious collectors. No one in 1993 was putting these comics aside in mint condition. Result: despite a relatively recent publication, high grade copies are much rarer than one might imagine, and prices have exploded since 2015.

Publication context

Batman Adventures was a spin-off series from Batman: The Animated Series, aimed at a younger audience and featuring the clean visual style of the TV series. In 1993, these "tie-in" comics were considered derivative products of no interest to collectors. The circulation of Batman Adventures #12 was modest compared to the main Batman or Detective Comics titles. Paul Dini, showrunner of the animated series, transposes his favorite character into the comics medium with this issue.

The creators

Paul Dini (writer) is the intellectual creator of Harley Quinn — he invented her for the episode "Joker's Favor" of the animated series in 1992. Bruce Timm, co-creator and designer of the character, oversees the art direction. The drawing of this issue is provided by Mike Parobeck in the simplified "DCAU" (DC Animated Universe) style. Rick Taylor does the coloring. The whole thing produces an issue that is visually consistent with the animated universe that gave birth to the character.

The history of the number

In this issue, Harley Quinn (aka Dr. Harleen Quinzel) attempts to prove her worth to the Joker by capturing Batman alone. The story already explores the toxic Joker/Harley dynamic that will become central to the character: his desire for approval, his underestimated competence, and the Joker's emotional cruelty towards him. Batgirl also steps in, foreshadowing the complex rivalry/friendship between the two female characters.

The cover

Bruce Timm's cover features Harley Quinn front and center, in her classic black and red jester costume, brandishing an oversized cap gun. Batman and the Joker appear in the background. The style is that of the Animated Series — clean lines, flattened colors, dynamic composition. This cover has become one of the most recognizable of the 1990s and is the subject of many tributes.

Edition and variants

Batman Adventures #12 had only one printing and no variant covers — common practice for "all-ages" titles from this period. The exact print run is unknown but estimated between 50,000 and 80,000 copies, significantly less than the main Batman titles of 1993 (which benefited from the post-Death of Superman speculative boom).

There is no separate newsstand edition for this title. Unlike the mainline DC comics of the time which had both newsstand and direct distribution, Batman Adventures was a direct distribution only title (comic shops). This point is important because it eliminates the newsstand vs. live debate that affects the prices of other keys from the 1990s.

CGC Census and rarity

As of the 2026 CGC Census, approximately 5,500 copies have been certified. In 9.8, approximately 700 copies exist — a number that seems high but represents less than 1.5% of the initial print run. In 9.6, around 1,800 copies. The particularity of this title: the matte cover paper is marked very easily (fingerprints, spine ticks), which prevents many copies from reaching 9.8. Demand far exceeds supply in high grades.

Value by grade

CGC gradeEstimated value 2026
CGC 9.8$35,000 – $45,000
CGC 9.6$12,000 – $18,000
CGC 9.4$5,000 – $8,000
GCC 9.2$3,000 – $4,500
CGC 8.0$1,200 – $2,000
CGC 6.0$500 – $800

Price history

Batman Adventures #12 is one of the most popular modern comics. In 2010, a CGC 9.8 was worth around $500. In 2015, it reached $2,500. Then the announcement of the film Suicide Squad (2016) with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn caused an explosion: $15,000 in 2016, then a peak at $50,000 in 2021 during the speculative bubble. Since then, a 20-30% correction has brought prices back to more sustainable but still historically high levels.

Long-term supporting factors

Harley Quinn is now an A-list DC Comics character with her own solo series, film appearances (Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Joker 2), and a massive merchandise presence. Unlike many speculative key issues of the 2020s, Batman Adventures #12 benefits from a diversified structural demand: Batman collectors, Harley fans, investors in modern comics. The price floor appears firmly established.

Points of vigilance when purchasing

The main danger for this title is excessive pressing. Many copies have been rushed from 9.6 to 9.8, sometimes with temporary results that don't hold up when regrading. Check the certification date on the label — a recently certified copy after pressing may have an unstable grade.

Also watch out for color-breaking spine ticks invisible in photos but noted by CGC. Be wary of examples with a “qualified” (Q) rating for a manufacturing defect — their value is 30-40% lower than the standard blue label. Last point: newsstand vs direct edition copies do not exist for this title (direct distribution only), so any mention of "newsstand" is a red flag.
