Captain America Comics #1 is one of the most important comics ever published. Released in March 1941, nine months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, this issue already showed Captain America punching Adolf Hitler in the face—a considerable act of editorial courage for Timely Comics (later Marvel) at a time when the United States had not yet entered the war.

For the collector, this title represents the absolute top of the Golden Age Marvel pyramid. With less than 300 graded copies of all grades and unparalleled historical significance, Captain America Comics #1 is an ultimate Grail whose simple possession confers immeasurable prestige in the world of collecting.

Publication context

In 1941, Timely Comics (Marvel's precursor publisher) published patriotic titles to capitalize on growing geopolitical tensions. Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, then very young, created Captain America as an explicit anti-Nazi symbol. The issue sold nearly a million copies — a smash hit that rivaled Superman in sales.

The creators

Joe Simon designed the character and co-wrote the issue with Jack Kirby. The Simon/Kirby duo was already recognized for its graphic dynamism and its ability to tell the action. Kirby, who was only 23 years old, already displayed his sense of kinetic composition which would revolutionize the medium. Al Liederman and Al Avison also contributed inking.

The inside story

The issue contains several stories: the origin of Steve Rogers, a frail volunteer transformed into a super-soldier by Dr. Erskine's serum, his first mission against Nazi spies infiltrated on American soil, and the introduction of Bucky Barnes as a sidekick. The 64-page anthology format offers dense and varied content.

Description of coverage

Simon and Kirby's iconic cover shows Captain America hitting Hitler with a right hook while Nazi soldiers fire on him to no effect. A tied up American soldier and a map of invasion plans complete the scene. It is one of the most famous and most reproduced covers in comic book history.

Edition and variants

The initial print run was estimated at around one million copies — an exceptional figure for the time. Distribution was exclusively on newsstands. There are no variations in the modern sense. Some copies show minor color variations linked to different times in press, but no price variations are documented.

CGC census data

The CGC census lists fewer than 280 graded examples. The highest grade known is a 9.4 NM (the Allentown copy). The vast majority of copies are between 0.5 and 3.0. Any copy above 5.0 is considered exceptionally rare. The survival rate of this title after 80+ years is infinitesimal compared to the original print run.

Price history (2015–2025)

Captain America Comics #1 rarely appears at auction. A CGC 6.0 example achieved $343,000 at Heritage Auctions in 2019. Low-end examples (1.0–2.0) have doubled in value in ten years. The film Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Endgame (2019) propelled interest, but the title's intrinsic rarity protects it from speculative fluctuations.

Points of vigilance when purchasing

Restoration

At this level of value and rarity, restoration is extremely common. More than 40% of the examples identified bear a Restored label. Typical interventions include: cover retouched, pages completed, spine reattached, and centerfold reattached. A Blue Label commands a 100–200% premium over an equivalent Restored.

Completeness

Check that all pages are present (64 pages + covers). Missing pages are common on low grade copies. An incomplete copy will see its value drop by 60–80% compared to a complete copy of the same apparent grade.

Origin

Copies with documented provenance (Allentown collection, Mile High, Edgar Church) command significant premiums. Be wary of unverified provenance attributions — always demand official CGC documentation.
