Publication context

In 1966, the civil rights movement was in full swing in the United States. Lee and Kirby, sensitive to the social issues of their time, created a powerful, intelligent and sovereign African character — a revolutionary representation for the times. The name “Black Panther” predates the founding of the eponymous political party by a few months, which is an often-debated historical coincidence.

The creators

Jack Kirby conceived the design of T'Challa and Wakanda, drawing on his vivid imagination to create a technologically advanced African nation. Joe Sinnott inked the issue, providing his characteristic sleek finish. Stan Lee wrote the screenplay, giving T'Challa an intelligence and dignity that immediately distinguished him from the stereotypes of the time.

The inside story

T'Challa invites the Fantastic Four to Wakanda under the guise of hospitality, then confronts them individually to test his abilities. He incapacitates each member with his advanced technology and martial skills. The issue ends with the revelation of his motivations: to prepare the defense of Wakanda against Klaw, the murderer of his father.

Description of coverage

Kirby's cover shows Black Panther leaping towards the Fantastic Four in a dynamic pose. His all-black costume stands out against the jungle/technological setting of Wakanda. The promotional text announces “Introducing the sensational Black Panther!” », highlighting the editorial event.

Edition and variants

The circulation is estimated at 300,000–350,000 copies, distributed on newsstands. UK pence (10d) variants exist and command a significant premium of 25–40% due to their rarity. Print quality varies between batches, with some copies exhibiting better color register than others.

CGC census data

The CGC census lists around 4,200 copies. The CGC 9.8s are extremely rare (less than 10 copies). Most are between 4.0 and 7.0. 9.4 and above represent approximately 3% of the total, creating strong pressure on high condition prices.

Price history (2015–2025)

Fantastic Four #52 saw one of the biggest increases on the market. A CGC 9.0 sold for $8,000 in 2015 reached $35,000 in 2018 after the film was announced. The peak was reached in 2021–2022 with record sales. Since the death of Chadwick Boseman and the release of Wakanda Forever, the market remains strong but has stabilized at high levels.

Points of vigilance when purchasing

Dry cleaning

Pressing is very common on this stock because of its value. A gain of half a point can be worth several thousand dollars. Check CGC grading history and be wary of copies resubmitted multiple times.

Restoration

Recolored cover (the black of the costume easily hides the retouching), edge reinforcement, and collage of fragments are the most common restorations. A UV scan can reveal procedures invisible to the naked eye.

Common faults

Marvel chipping on the black edges of the cover, foxing (brown spots linked to humidity), spine roll, and off-center stapling. The intense black of the cover easily shows scuffs and color chips.
