Only one crossover really matters to Power Girl, and it doesn't feature her: the mid-1980s cosmological overhaul, which removes her original world and deprives her of her past. Twenty years later, a second redesign gives it back to him. In between, she goes through the events at the publisher without anything happening to her.
This file reverses the usual logic. For most characters, crossovers are episodes that add to a trajectory. Here, two of them define the character — by deleting and then restoring its origin.
The sorting is therefore simple to do, and severe: two decisive events, and a long list of figurations.
The Mid-1980s Remake
The publisher decides to unify its continuity by removing the parallel Earths accumulated over decades.
The objective was editorial: the proliferation of alternative universes made the catalog unreadable for new readers. The solution chosen was radical — one world, one story.
Power Girl is one collateral victim in the strict sense. Defined since 1976 as coming from a parallel Earth, it survives the event but its origin ceases to exist.
This corpus emphasizes what is unique about this situation. The character was not killed, rewritten or replaced: he was left in place without foundation, in a universe where his own biography has become impossible.
What you need to know when purchasing
The numbers for this event are searched — but for the event itself. Power Girl is just one of dozens of consequences, and the request that bears these numbers does not belong to her.
A collector of the character therefore buys them at a price set by others. It's defensible for understanding the case, but you have to know what you're paying for.
The following rewrite
A new origin is attributed to the character in the late 1980s, unrelated to the previous one.
This solution remained in force for around fifteen years, without ever convincing: it explained its powers without explaining She, and deprived the character of the connection that had made her interesting.
Collection point: the numbers which document this rewriting are perfectly identifiable and totally unvalued. They contain no first appearances — so no index lists them.
This is the best opportunity in this entire file, and it is due to a gap in the market rather than a rarity.
The second redesign, in the mid-2000s
Twenty years after the first, the publisher is carrying out a new reorganization of its continuity - and returning Power Girl to her initial origin.
The event closes a parenthesis opened two decades earlier. Few characters have had their situation restored after such a delay, and that says something about the readers' persistence on this particular point.
These issues are recent, widely printed, and abundant. Purchase of reading, not placement.
The events where she only passes
It must be said bluntly: apart from the three moments above, Power Girl goes through the major events of her publisher without her situation changing.
She appears there as a member of her team, participates in operations, and emerges unchanged. These numbers have no specific value for this file.
The criterion to apply is therefore particularly simple here: does the event affect its origin or to his exile status? If the answer is no, it's a team number.
What this file teaches
An observation that goes beyond this character.
The major continuity overhauls produce, among all publishers, a category of characters that could be called cosmological orphans: those whose existence depended on a suppressed structure.
Their subsequent fate is instructive. Some disappear, others are rewritten, a few — like here — go through years of incoherence before being given back their past.
For the collector, these characters present a recognizable profile: an old and solid first appearance, then a long period of unvalued issues which nevertheless contain the essential part of their editorial history.
It’s land that the market doesn’t know how to name, and therefore doesn’t value it.
Collection strategy
Prioritize rewrite numbers, at the end of the 1980s. Invalorized, identifiable, and containing the real material of the character.
Buy Rework Events to Understand, not to invest: their price is set by a demand foreign to the character.
Ignore tie-ins with no stakes. They are numerous and do not concern this file.
As always, condition and gradation determine value; relying on real recent sales is strongly recommended.
