This characteristic is not an author's coquetry. An adversary whose appearance and motives are unknown occupies the reader's imagination much more effectively than an adversary who is introduced.
1. The silhouette campaign (1986-1987)
Chris Claremont. The most skillful arc in the file, and it involves showing nothing.
For more than a year, a faceless figure gives orders off-camera. The reader knows that a manipulator exists; he doesn't know anything else.
What this build accomplishes is difficult to achieve any other way. A presented opponent is immediately measurable— we see its appearance, we estimate its power, we place it in a category. A hidden adversary escapes all measure, and the reader therefore gives him the stature he wants to give him.
The 1987 revelation comes after this work was done. That's why it works.
2. Mutant Massacre (1986)
Executors decimate an underground community, on the orders of a sponsor whose name and face we know neither.
The arc is notable for what it involves: the character causes a major crossover before existing for the reader. When he appears, a year later, he is already responsible for one of the most notable massacres in the franchise.
Few authors have the means to introduce an adversary in this way — it requires using an entire event as a preamble.
3. Inferno (1988-1989)
The event which delivers the answers accumulated over three years: the real nature of his most accomplished production, the object of his manipulations, the scale of the system he had put in place.
Its strength lies in an inversion that this corpus readily points out: the effects were shown before the cause. The reader meets a person, becomes attached to them, watches them live for years — and then learns what they are.
No immediate explanation would have produced the same effect.
4. Kieron Gillen's arc (2011-2012)
The story that finally finds a register to the character.
Until then threatening and opaque, he becomes talkative, vain, delighted with himself - and it is precisely this assurance that makes him disturbing. A scientist convinced of his superiority is scarier than a mute silhouette.
This shift in tone has been preserved by all subsequent authors. The modern version of the character comes from there, and this arc deserves to be known for that reason.
5. The 2019 redesign
The mutant franchise is revamped, and the character gets a structural function: entire mechanisms of the new device depend on it.
It's not an arc in the usual sense — there's no narrative that begins and ends — but it's the most consequential change of his career.
It ceases to be an adversary that we face to become a piece that we depends. Uncomfortable position for the heroes, and extremely solid for the character.

If you want construction: Mutant Massacre (1986), then the revelation of 1987, then Inferno (1988-1989). Three years of storytelling in order, and one of the best displays of narrative patience in the medium.

What this file teaches
A basic remark, because it explains the form of this list.
Most adversaries are built by accumulation: they appear, return, gain depth over the course of the confrontations. Their best material is usually late.
This was built by subtraction. Its peak is before his revelation, when he was still just a question. Everything that followed—the Victorian origin, the motivations, the comic register—was added to fill a deliberate void.
This corpus considers that this is what makes the case interesting, and also what explains its irregularity: a character invented after the fact has no guaranteed consistency.
It is finally a practical argument for the reader: on this character,publication order matters more than chronological order. Reading its Victorian origin before the silhouettes of 1986 would destroy precisely what makes the file interesting.

1986-1989— the founding segment. Well preserved period: the supply in good condition is abundant, and only the value of high grades counts.
2011-2012— the arc that sets the tone. Recent, very accessible.
2019 and after— the structural position. Abundant, with the usual precautions on alternative covers.
⚠️ The only serious point of vigilance in the file remains the gray area between silhouette apparitions and full apparition. Check what the number actually shows.
