Malicia's first appearance: Avengers Annual #10 (1981)

Avengers Annual #10 presents a double singularity. The character appears on the wrong side – she attacks, and wins – and the issue is in a format that collectors have long ignored.

These two characteristics explain most of its behavior on the market, and they deserve to be detailed separately.

What an annual is, and why it changes everything

Let's start with the point that most guides omit, because it conditions the purchase.

Un annual is a special issue, published once a year, thicker and more expensive than ordinary issues. It does not bear the series numbering and is stored separately.

Three consequences arise from this, all favorable to the attentive collector.

Print runs are lower. An annual cost more and was aimed at regular readers, not occasional newsstand buyers.

Conservation is less good. Thicker format, therefore more vulnerable slice; and above all a number which does not fit into a sequence is placed less carefully.

The census is lower. Guides and indexes are built around continuous numbering. A special issue goes more easily unnoticed — even when it contains a major first appearance.

This corpus considers annuals as one of the most interesting segments of the market, precisely for this last reason.

Publication context

In 1981,Chris Claremont has been writing the X-Men series for six years and has installed a gallery of mutants including several female adversaries. This annual issue of The Avengers serves to introduce a new recruit to this gallery.

The story has a second function, an editorial one, which has caused a lot of ink to be spilled: it returns about the treatment of a female character in an earlier series, and made the Avengers say, bluntly, that they had behaved badly.

This is a rare case of explicit editorial correction— an author who uses a story to reproach his colleagues for a past choice. This dimension contributes sustainably to the reputation of the issue, regardless of the first appearance it contains.

The Story Inside

Malicia acts there under the orders of a group of mutant adversaries. His power - absorbing the abilities and memories of others through contact - allows him to incapacitate a top-tier heroine.

The decisive point: this absorption is permed. The character does not leave with a temporary advantage but with the powers of another, permanently.

This irreversible consequence is what distinguishes this story from an ordinary confrontation, and it will nourish the character for decades: she carries within herself someone she has destroyed.

The cover

Michael Golden's cover shows the team battling the mutant adversaries. Malicia appears there, but without the treatment reserved for a first appearance - no one, in 1981, knew that this secondary character was going to come of age.

This is a common configuration in annuals and it is important: an issue whose cover does not indicate its contents sells for a long time at ordinary prices.

Points of vigilance when purchasing

Slice stress is the dominant fault in this format. Thicker than an ordinary booklet, an annual bends more when reading, and the spine marks are what the gradation punishes the harshest.

The ranking poses a practical problem: not bearing the series numbering, these numbers were often stored separately, sometimes flat, sometimes in less neat boxes. A well-preserved annual is proportionally rarer than an issue of the same year.

Incomplete descriptions Finally. Many sellers list an annual by its series title and year, without mentioning its contents. This is a source of error — and opportunity.

A first appearance from the bad side

One final point is worth asking, because it concerns an entire profile of characters.

Malicia begins as opponent. She joined the X-Men two years later, and it is under this identity that she is known today.

This corpus observes that this journey produces a particular valuation. A first appearance of an adversary is published without highlighting: no one yet knows that the character will count, and the cover does not indicate it. It therefore circulates at ordinary prices for years.

When the character switches to the hero side and becomes popular, the demand retroactively shifts to a number that had never been treated as a key — and which, all this time, has not been kept with the care reserved for keys.

Result: on this type of number, the copies in good condition are abnormally rare compared to what the draw would suggest. This is the configuration to know before buying, and it justifies paying the difference for a truly preserved example.
