The Golden Age: Why the Rules Are Changing

This is the central methodological point of this guide, and it only applies to ancient periods.

The rest of the file: accessible and poorly followed

After the founding number, this file completely changes its nature.

Its key list is short and old. It is essentially limited to its first appearances, which concentrates all the expenditure on a narrow segment.

Its best numbers are invisible to the market. Everything that relates to Status rather than the ability remains at regular price, indefinitely.

Should we graduate?

Tight budget — the redefinitions. The issues where the character changes nature, starting with the revamp from the mid-1980s. Cheap, and they are the ones that explain the version that everyone knows today.

Intermediate budget – the notable clashes. The issues from the 1950s and 1960s where he really plays the main role, in high rank. A rarer period than you might think.

Comfortable budget — the foundation. The 1940 issue, graduated, without exception. And at a time when you know the segment well enough to judge an ad.

A note on the founding adversaries

This file belongs to a particular category: that of adversaries that appeared in the very first years of the support.

Their market situation is still the same, and it deserves to be known.

Their founding key is inaccessible to most collectors, not only by its price but by the level of verification it requires. The senior segment is the most technical in the market, and the least forgiving.

In return, their later work – eighty years of publications – is immense and almost entirely cheap.

This progression puts learning before spending — which is rarely necessary, and is necessary here.

Three common mistakes

Buying an ungraded Golden Age issue because it “looks good.” Restoration and trimming precisely improve the appearance. A particularly sharp example for its age calls for more checking, not less.

Confusing rank and integrity. A complete example in average condition is better than a beautifully restored example. These are two categories, not two levels.
