To read the Punisher in the right order, start with his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #129 (February 1974, Gerry Conway & Ross Andru), move to his expanded origin in Marvel Preview #2 (1975), then the founding 1986 limited series (Circle of Blood, Steven Grant & Mike Zeck) before tackling Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX run (2004-2008, #1-60), widely regarded as the definitive take on the character. For collecting, the grail is still #129: an eBay median of €1,368 (82 listings, June 2026).
The Punisher debuted in 1974, making him a Bronze Age character, not a Silver Age one (the Silver Age ended around 1970). There is no "Silver Age Punisher" — his historical entry point is Amazing Spider-Man #129, the logical starting point for any chronological read.
This guide separates two things people often conflate: reading order (where to start to understand Frank Castle) and collecting order (which issues are worth chasing). Every figure below is sourced: real-time eBay medians via our estimator (limited to Amazing Spider-Man) and verified editorial facts.
The recommended reading order, step by step
- The origins (1974-1975). Amazing Spider-Man #129 introduces Frank Castle as a Spider-Man antagonist, manipulated by the Chameleon. Marvel Preview #2 (1975) gives him his full name and his founding trauma: his family gunned down by the Mafia. This is the character's narrative bedrock.
- The 1986 limited series (Circle of Blood). Written by Steven Grant and drawn by Mike Zeck, this first solo series in five issues launched the Punisher toward success. This is where Frank becomes a headliner rather than a supporting player.
- The 1987-1995 era. Mike Baron's run on The Punisher vol.2 (from 1987), then Punisher War Journal (1988) and Punisher War Zone (1992): pure 80s-90s action-movie fare, worth reading for context but not essential to grasp the core.
- Garth Ennis' MAX run (2004-2008). The must-read. Ennis uses the freedom of the MAX imprint to deliver a realistic, brutal Frank Castle across 60 issues, complemented by the Born miniseries. It's the absolute benchmark, and the best modern entry point for a new reader.
Two entry points depending on your profile
- Fast / modern reader. Go straight to Ennis' Punisher MAX. The run stands alone, no prior decades required, and remains the best introduction to the character as he's understood today.
- Chronological collector. Follow the order above, from #129 (1974) to MAX (2004), to track the character's evolution from a simple Spider-Man foe to a full-fledged anti-hero.

Why #129 tops the collection
With a €1,368 median across 82 active listings, Amazing Spider-Man #129 is by far the most expensive Punisher-related issue — and the character's only true grail. Three reasons:
- It's the first appearance. No solo-series issue can rival a "1st appearance" under the Amazing Spider-Man banner, Marvel's most-collected series.
- The condition spread is huge. The "all grades combined" median ranges from €6 (lots, very low grade) to nearly €3,900 for high-grade slabs: on this issue, grade is everything.
- Liquidity. 82 active listings at any time for a 1974 comic is rare, and a sign of deep demand, boosted by screen adaptations (Jon Bernthal foremost among them).
Reading and collecting tips
- Read first, collect later. The runs (1986, MAX) are available in collected editions (TPB, Epic Collection, Omnibus) far cheaper than original single issues: ideal for discovering before investing.
- To collect, prioritize #129. It's the centerpiece, the most liquid and most sought-after. Always check condition and live value: the medians above are from June 2026 and prices move.
- Beware "all editions combined" medians. The solo series span multiple volumes: an isolated price means nothing without specifying the edition, volume and condition.
