Published in May 1984,Amazing Spider-Man #252marks a turning point in Spider-Man history: the first appearance of the black symbiote suit in the regular series. Although the suit technically debuted in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #8 (published after but chronologically earlier), it was ASM #252 that introduced the black suit to regular Spider-Man readers, with its iconic Ron Frenz cover.

This issue is the starting point for the entire symbiote mythology that will give birth to Venom, Carnage, Toxin and dozens of other characters. In 2026, it directly benefits from the craze for the Venom films and the speculation around the symbiote in the MCU.

Ratings by grade: standard edition vs variants

ASM #252 exists in several distinct editions, each with its own rating. The standard edition (direct market, Spider-Man logo in the corner) is the most common, but variants attract significant premiums:

The Canadian Price variant: the holy grail of variant price collectors

The Canadian Price variant of ASM #252 has a cover price of 75¢ (instead of 60¢ for the US edition). It was distributed exclusively in Canada on newsstands and represents a tiny fraction of the total circulation. In 2026, it is one of the most sought after Canadian Price Variants of the entire Copper Age.

How to identify it:The cover price at the top left says "75¢" instead of "60¢". The copy bears a UPC (newsstand) barcode. There is NO Canadian Price Variant direct edition (logo) — any seller claiming otherwise is proposing a fake or confusion.

Rarity :The CGC census lists around 30 to 50 graded copies of the Canadian variant, compared to more than 3,000 for the standard edition. In 9.8, only a handful of copies exist, which explains the five-figure prices.

Beware of fakes:Cases of modification of the cover price (erasure of the US price and printing of a false Canadian price) have been reported. CGC verifies authenticity during grading, but be careful with raw copies.

Newsstand vs Direct: identify and promote each edition

For ASM #252, the newsstand/live distinction is visually clear:

In 1984, the newsstand/live ratio was still about 50/50 to 60/40 in favor of the newsstand. However, high grade newsstand copies are much rarer because they were displayed in displays, handled by customers, and often returned to the publisher after a few weeks. A newsstand in 9.8 is therefore significantly rarer than a live broadcast in 9.8.

Historical context and positioning in the symbiote saga

ASM #252 is part of a set of key issues related to the Black Suit Saga:

Owning all of these issues constitutes a “saga set” very popular with thematic collectors. ASM #252 occupies a central place because it is the issue that readers of the time discovered first, even before the publication of Secret Wars #8.

Ron Frenz's cover — Spider-Man in a black suit swinging above New York with a crescent moon in the background — has become one of the most iconic images of the character and is regularly the subject of homage variations on modern comics.
