Why collecting Sandman is more complex than a 75-issue run

๐ŸŒ™

Sandman #1-75... but also much more

The main series spans 75 issues, but the Sandman universe also includes Sandman: Overture (6 issues, 2013-2015), Sandman: The Dream Hunters (4 issues), Endless Nights (1 issue), Sandman Universe (ongoing), and spin-offs (Lucifer, Books of Magic, John Constantine...). Without an app, you can't know if your collection is truly complete.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Is Sandman #1 (1989) really worth something?

Sandman #1 (January 1989, Neil Gaiman/Sam Kieth) in Near Mint condition is worth between $100 and $800. The version with the red circle DC logo (first printing) is worth more than reprints. Without accurate documentation, you can't know which version you own.

๐ŸŽญ

The 9 story arcs and their key issues

Preludes & Nocturnes (#1-8), The Doll's House (#9-16), Dream Country (#17-20), Season of Mists (#21-28), A Game of You (#32-37), Brief Lives (#41-49), Fables & Reflections, The Kindly Ones, The Wake (#70-75)... Each arc has its essential issues. Do you know which ones you own?

๐Ÿ“š

The Netflix series and growing demand

The Netflix Sandman series (2022) reignited interest in the original issues. Key issues saw their values rise. Without an up-to-date valuation tool, you're missing out on this information.

Frequently asked questions about the Sandman collection

Sandman #1 (January 1989, Neil Gaiman/Sam Kieth) is the first appearance of Dream/Morpheus in his own series. The first printing is identified by the red circle DC logo on the cover. In Near Mint condition (CGC 9.4), a first printing is worth between $200 and $800. Since the Netflix series (2022), demand has increased. Reprints are worth between $5 and $20. My Comics Collection lets you note which printing you own.
Finding all 75 issues of Sandman in good condition is achievable but takes time. The hardest issues to find in Near Mint are the early ones (#1-8, Preludes & Nocturnes) as they were heavily read and poorly stored. Issues #50-75 are more recent and generally in better condition. In Fine/Very Fine condition, a complete run can be assembled for $300-$800. In Near Mint, expect to pay $800-$2,000.
Sandman had several special issues: the Sandman Special #1 (1991, part of the Dream Country saga), and issues outside the regular numbering. Sandman: Midnight Theatre (1995, crossover with Wesley Dodds) is also worth knowing. Endless Nights (2003, one-shot) tells stories about the 7 Endless. My Comics Collection lists these special issues separately from the main series.
Sandman: Overture (6 issues, 2013-2015, Neil Gaiman/J.H. Williams III) is the official prequel written by Gaiman himself. It tells the events that weakened Dream before his capture in issue #1. Visually, it is one of the most beautiful works in modern comics. For any serious Sandman collector, it is an essential addition. Issue #1 is worth between $10 and $50, and the complete series between $30 and $150 depending on condition.
The Sandman universe spawned several important spin-offs: Lucifer (75 issues, Mike Carey), Books of Magic (75 issues, John Ney Rieber), Death: The High Cost of Living (3 issues), Death: The Time of Your Life (3 issues), Thessaly (4 issues), The Dreaming (60 issues)... These series are tied to the Sandman universe but form separate collections. My Comics Collection lets you import them individually.
Yes, the Netflix Sandman series (2022-) reignited interest in the original issues. Sandman #1 saw its value increase by 30-50% following the series announcement. Issues tied to adapted characters (Death, Lucifer, John Constantine) also rose. Death: The High Cost of Living #1 and Books of Magic #1 were most impacted. My Comics Collection lets you track the evolving value of your issues.
