Why your Iron Man collection is worth so much more since 2008

🤖

Tales of Suspense AND Iron Man: two separate series

Iron Man debuted in Tales of Suspense (#39–99, 1963–1968) before getting his own series. Managing these two linked series in Excel means two tabs, two numbering systems, and guaranteed confusion.

💥

The MCU changed everything

Iron Man (2008) triggered a revolution. Tales of Suspense #39 went from a few hundred dollars to $10,000–$500,000. Iron Man #55 (first Thanos) multiplied by 50 after Infinity War. Without valuation tracking, you have no idea what your collection is worth today.

🔑

Armor Wars and the essential runs

Demon in a Bottle (#120–128), Armor Wars (#225–232), Extremis (#1–6 vol.4)... Each arc has its key issues. Without an app, it's impossible to see which runs you have complete and which ones have gaps.

🔄

7 Iron Man volumes and their numbering

Iron Man vol.1 (1968–1996, 332 issues), vol.2 Heroes Reborn (12 issues), vol.3 (1998–2004, 89 issues), vol.4 (2004–2009, 35 issues), vol.5 (2012)... Without a dedicated tool, juggling each volume's numbering is a constant headache.

Frequently asked questions about Iron Man collecting

Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963, Stan Lee/Larry Lieber/Don Heck) is the first appearance of Tony Stark / Iron Man. It's one of the most valuable Silver Age key issues. In Near Mint condition (CGC 9.4), it's worth between $150,000 and $500,000. In Very Good condition (CGC 5.0–6.0), between $10,000 and $50,000. Since the Iron Man film (2008), its value has multiplied by 10 to 100 depending on grade. My Comics Collection logs it with a key issue badge.
Iron Man #55 (February 1973, Jim Starlin) is the first appearance of Thanos — and also of Drax the Destroyer. Before Avengers: Infinity War (2018), it sold for $500–$3,000. After the film, its value exploded to $3,000–$15,000 in Near Mint. In Fine/Very Fine condition, copies can still be found for $500–$2,000. It's an essential Bronze Age key issue for any Marvel collector. My Comics Collection tracks its price evolution.
The "Demon in a Bottle" arc (Iron Man #120–128, 1979, Michelinie/Layton) is one of the most important arcs in Iron Man history. It dealt with Tony Stark's alcoholism in a pioneering way. Issues #120 (start) and #128 (conclusion) are the key issues of this arc. A Near Mint copy of #128 is worth $50–$200. The complete arc in good condition is worth $200–$600.
Armor Wars (Iron Man #225–232, 1987–1988, Michelinie/Layton) is the arc in which Tony Stark discovers his armor technology was stolen and used by criminals. He decides to destroy every armor based on his tech. It's a defining arc that inspired Iron Man 2. The issues in this arc are affordable ($5–$50 each) and represent an excellent entry point for classic Iron Man collecting.
Tales of Suspense #39 has a British variant (sold in the UK) with a slightly different cover — extremely rare. Modern Iron Man issues (post-2000) have many retailer variants. Invincible Iron Man #1 (2022) had exclusive 1:25 and 1:50 retailer variants. The Superior Iron Man and Infamous Iron Man runs also have their variants. My Comics Collection lets you log the variants you own.
Yes, Iron Man appears in many mini-series and one-shots: Iron Man: Armor Wars II (1990–1991, 12 iss.), Iron Man: Extremis (2005–2006, 6 iss., Warren Ellis), Invincible Iron Man (2008, Fraction/Larocca), Superior Iron Man (2015), Infamous Iron Man (Doom as IM, 2016–2018)... My Comics Collection imports each series separately via the Grand Comics Database.
