Cataloguing a comic collection requires four fields at minimum: series, issue number, condition and acquisition info. Serious collections add grade details, variants, signed status and valuation. Fields that matter

The cataloguing schema every serious collector uses

Series + issue number — the primary key. Include volume/year for reboots (X-Men Vol. 1 vs. Vol. 2).
Publisher + release date — for sorting and historical filtering.
Condition / grade — raw grade (G/VG/F/FN/VF/NM) or CGC numeric grade with slab ID.
Variant info — cover variant (A/B/incentive), first print, newsstand vs. direct edition.
Signature status — signed, CGC Signature Series (yellow label), witness authentication.
Acquisition info — purchase date, purchase price, source (shop, con, online, inherited).
Current value — updated periodically for valuation and insurance purposes.
Key issue status — first appearance, origin, significant story event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both. Raw copies use letter grades (FN, VF, NM) for ballpark. CGC slabs use the exact numeric grade (9.0, 9.4, 9.8). A good catalogue stores both — the letter for easy reading, the number for precision.
